A few weeks ago it seemed like all of my friends in the blogosphere were discussing late summer style. Spring fashion tends to run into summer fashion almost seamlessly: the ethereal floral dresses, bright colors and platform sandals look just as pretty in July as they do in May. But come August and September many of us start to turn our minds to darker colors and heavier fabrics, even if the temperature outside is still in the 90′s or higher.
While everyone else was discussing what they were wearing, I, for one, was simply not interested in my closet. It was too hot to walk down the street, let alone be stylish. After some thought, I realized all I wanted was simplicity. These lightweight white jeans, paired with a simple black T-shirt and some fun accessories, have been among my late summer style favorites. White jeans I love you!
Of all the wardrobe staples that I have ever longed for white jeans have been the hardest to find. There are all sorts of possible problems with this kind of pant. They can make one look fat and they can be unattractively see-through. So when I tried on this pair by “James Jeans” I knew the credit card would be emerging from my pocketbook once again.
The cardinal rules of white jeans
1 – When shopping for a pair of white jeans, try them on! Finding a pair that look good can be difficult. Look at them from the front and back. Choose a style that would normally be flattering anyway. For me, this means a long inseam and some flare below the knee. Ask a friend for an honest opinion before you remove the tags.
2 – Find a pair that are lightweight without being see-through. White jeans are most appropriate when worn in the warmer months, so you’ll want to avoid heavy weight denim. At the same time, you won’t want them to be too transparent. My jeans have fake front pockets, which means there’s no “you can see the front pocket fabric right through the front of the jeans” effect.
3 – Wear nude-colored underwear. No explanation needed.
4 – Invest in a light-colored belt. They Lycra fiber that is present in almost every pair of jeans out there these days helps to make them fit just so, but it does tend to mean the jeans will stretch out a bit as you wear them. A belt will alleviate any droop. Most of my belts are black or dark brown, which look too heavy, so I purchased an inexpensive narrow white belt to wear with these jeans.
5 – Pair white with black for a sophisticated but casual look. This isn’t really a rule, but white bottoms with a black top is a classic style that looks chic on everyone at any age. I like to wear my white jeans with a slim black knit top as I feel it’s the best on my figure, but I’ve seen loose black tops with skinny white trousers, and dozens of other variations that all feel crisp and elegant in the hottest weather.
