The Denim Jacket at Night

A denim jacket is a delightfully versatile piece of clothing. Mine is a year-round favorite as it enhances so many different looks.  You can see it herehere and here worn during the day, but I also love wearing this classic jacket on balmy summer evenings. Denim has a wonderful way of calming down a dressy outfit, taking it from maybe-a-little-too-formal to elegant-yet-casual. I also like the fact that dark denim looks amazing with black, my favorite evening color.   The metal buttons that decorate most denim jackets coordinate with metallic jewelry of all kinds and it’s fun to wear shiny, glittery, jewelry in the evening.

Friday night was beautiful and balmy, a wonderful start to the liquid summer nights we have here in Los Angeles. My husband and I had plans for dinner and I wanted to wear an outfit that would be elegant but casual enough for a local restaurant.  The simple little black jersey dress I chose to wear felt a bit too serious. So on went some shimmery copper heels and ropes of chain worn in a Chanel-inspired way, but now I felt too dressy. Then I pulled on my denim jacket and the outfit felt just right. I tucked a lipstick and phone into my mother’s vintage leopard purse, grabbed a little hat and, why not, a pair of lace gloves that have been calling to me for weeks, and we were on our way.

The clothes:

  • Jacket by Tommy Hillfiger
  • Dress purchased at Barneys many years ago
  • Necklace by Cara Couture via Gilt.com
  • Bracelet by Forever 21
  • The hat, gloves and purse are all vintage
  • Shoes by DKNY

Tell me about your favorite denim jacket.  What does it look like?  How do you like to wear it?  Do you ever wear it at night to make a dressy outfit more casual?

I’m all about layers of accessories! Such an edgy, interesting look here. I actually don’t have a denim jacket — isn’t that weird? I need to scour some thrift shops ASAP. Using one to tone down a fancy dress is a great idea!

I purchased a denim jacket in the mid-1990′s and didn’t buy a new one until last year. They really are a staple! I highly recommend finding one if you can. Glad you like the outfit!

I adore these photos and the styling – what did the hubster use for lighting? (really good flash) or a post editing goodness? Love the vintage leopard bag too.
I have two denim jackets I have had forever – one is a bleached denim in biker style and the other just a normal darker denim with a little distressing and cropped sleeves – perfect for summer.

Big fat boo on the L’Oreal front – I’m mostly a creams, true match foundation (good for my skin tone/staying power) or glamshine lipgloss girl, I’m yet to try Revlons foundation-have you had tried any good ones? My mums addicted to the Revlond red lippy and always keeps going back to buying the same one!

So glad you like the photos. They were taken with natural light and a big Dslr camera. He does do some things post-production, like remove the trash from the ground!
As for L’oreal makeup I have found a few products I like in their line but I find it hit or miss. Revlon’s lipstick is fantastic. I can see why your mom is obsessed. I’m pretty obsessed myself.
I mostly use higher end department store foundation. Unless the foundation is very sheer I find I must try on the product to find the correct color. I had one that I loved in college–pale striped denim with a brown cordoroy collar {it was Ralph Lauren and such a big deal at the time}. But I have never really gotten back into them – probably because I wore that one to death. I have been thinking of getting a denim blazer though lately. You look fabulous in these photos Heather!

Great accessorizing! I lost my denim jacket, it seems. I bet I left it at the gym on a warm day. I haven’t quite accepted this enough to buy a new one though!

I totally understand. Hate it when I loose things. Sometimes it takes a while to replace them as well.

I have a BCBG cropped denim jacket that I have had for about 13 years. I often wear it over a dress to dress-it-down. But haven’t thought to wear it with a really dressy dress. Will have to try it soon. And love the chains worn Chanel style. A great vintage touch.

So glad you like the look Tracey and thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a comment too. I have another denim jacket that is at least 13 years old as well. A good denim jacket never really goes out of style!

I love denim jackets and am in need of a new one. I have one that is really old and worn out but very comfortable. I just feel sloppy when I wear it though. Guess it’s time to go shopping!

There are a lot of denim jackets in the stores right now. I guess it’s a trend, but a nice classic trend! I have a really old one (that I’m wearing right now actually) and my newer one that I’m wearing in these photos.

My point of view denim jackets are great adjusting items as we move from summer season into fall.

    • Heather Fonseca August 14, 2012 at 11:25 am #

Hi Tina. Where I live the climate is relatively mild, so denim works year round!
