A Chic and Summery Denim Trend to Love

Denim. I just can’t seem to get enough these days. White denim, blue denim, chambray, colored denim, and printed denim pieces have recently found homes in my closet.  Could it be a trend?  Well, yeah. But it’s a trend that really works for my lifestyle and is perfect for the more casual atmosphere of the summer months. The trick is to find a way to wear these super-trendy pieces so they look chic rather than trendy.

The perfect white denim skirt has been a “holy grail” item for years.  I love wearing white denim in the summer months and a skirt in the fabric has always seemed like the perfect blend of informality and city chic. Unfortunately white jean skirts have been in short supply in recent years.  Even The Gap, my “go to” store for denim basics, was without this summer classic for many years and if they did have them they were of the super-short mini skirt variety. So earlier this spring when I bought my blue denim pencil skirt I asked about a white version and was told to head to their website to check it out.  I rarely buy clothes on-line, but this was an exception.

What do you think?  Did I hit that chic spot between trendy and classic in this ensemble of pale green denim jacket, chambray blouse and white denim pencil skirt?

I could go on and on about each of the pieces I’m wearing in this outfit. The zipper-top, plastic-coated, purse with a print of vintage cameras is a new purchase as is the pistachio ice-cream colored denim jacket.  The sandals have been in my wardrobe for a while and the top is a perennial summer favorite that I bought years ago at The Gap. The photos were taken by my husband Hugo in the late afternoon in my mother-in-law’s lush back yard.

  • Jacket – Sanctuary
  • Blouse – The Gap
  • Skirt – J-Crew (It’s on sale right now. You can see it here.)
  • Bracelet – Wet Seal
  • Sandals – Roberto De Carlo
  • Purse – Blue Q

While researching this post I found a few other posts on white denim pencil skirts. My favorite is Making it Work: White Denim Pencil Skirt. Check it out for further white denim skirt inspiration.

So what do you think of the pencil skirt trend? Will you be wearing a white jean skirt this summer?

Don’t you just love when an outfit feels good from head to toe?! I haven’t owned any white denim in years, but I wouldn’t mind a pair of skinnies or shorts!

Oh, I do love it when an outfit really hits the nail on the head, especially when it’s a color palette I’m not used to. I don’t usually wear pastels or soft colors, so I’m moving into new territory here. I think you’d look great in white skinnies for sure.

    Gorgeous photos!!
You’re on the money with this outfit. Denim skirt/jacket is timeless in my humble opinion.

    Happy weekend!

Fresh & summery. I love how the fluffy hair, wide top & platform shoes add a bit (70s) retro charme while the skirt & the jacket are contemporary (but classics).

    You look great!

My “holy grail item” are white skinny jeans or more precisely; the thighs to wear white skinny jeans ;) (I fear it won`t happen though…)

    Have a nice weekend, dear!

    Yours, Jen

Jenny I think you’re too hard on yourself. I’m sure you’d look great in white skinny jeans.

I probably won’t be wearing it this summer because I’ll be working at camp most of the summer. Will probably wear jeans or capris.

I spotted that bag recently on another website. So cute! I have my eye on it! May have to treat myself.

It’s such a cute bag and it wasn’t expensive. I love having something fun to tote around this time of year. Leather just seems to serious.

    Hi Heather.
I feel a bit awkward here. A bit like a man waiting in for his wife to come out of the changing room in a womens cloths shop :)
I’m a bit off topic but I did just wanted to pop by and thank you personally for your input on my guest post on Sherryl’s blog.
You have a great looking blog here and I see that you do all your own modeling? I was wondering if you are a professional model or did you just bite the bullet and go for it?

Don’t feel awkward! My husband takes all the photos, so just look at this as a photography blog. :D
Thank you for coming by to say thanks. That was such a good post. It really encouraged me to finally find more information on SEO which has confused me for a while.
Im not a professional model but I’ve always liked being in front of the camera. Thanks so much for stopping by!

I am so with you on denim Heather–I can’t seem to get enough of it lately and am regretting that I gave away a limited edition Levi fitted denim jacket because I really want it back to wear under a leather jacket in the fall…yes already thinking ahead. I need a great pair of white denim jeans in the worst way! I love your whole outfit, I think it may be my favorite one you’ve done so far. Happy weekend to you!

I’ve given away thing and then wondered what I was thinking, but with so little storage I just can’t keep everything. There are so many good denim jackets out there right now I’m sure you’ll find something.
So glad you like the outfit. I think I’ll be living in it this summer.

You are the perfect balance of classic and trend so I guess that means CHIC. Looking fabric. I love how denim makes a dressed up silhouette look casual and so wearable.

You look nice. I don’t know what it is, but I am not a denim person. I only own 6 pair of jeans and 4 of those I took from my daughter’s closet. I do own one jean skirt. It’s long and wide at the bottom so I guess that is a maxi. Ha. I own different types of jackets . . . none of them denim.

Denim isn’t for everyone.I’m rather amazed that I’m so into it this year because for a long time I avoided the trend entirely.
