If you follow my blog then you know I have a “thing” for jean skirts. Currently I own two: the blue one I wore here and here and the white one that I wore here and here. I’m so in love with denim pencil skirts that I was surprised to read that the blue jean-loving author of Eat, Sleep, Denim doesn’t like them. (Let’s Discuss:The Playful Denim Skirt). I’m on a crusade to bring my favorite skirt trend to the world because if they go away I won’t be able to find any more, and I really want to buy some colorful versions of this practical yet sexy take on the classic jean skirt when I can squeeze it into my budget. So I’m doing it again. Here’s yet another outfit post featuring my newest obsession: the denim pencil skirt.
Denim Skirt and Black T-shirt
I usually wear my denim pencil skirt is with a simple black t-shirt. This fitted, long, scoop neck one from The Gap is my favorite. Normally I run around town in practical flats or low heels, but to make the look a bit sexier I’ll wear these crazy high, sexy ankle strap high-heel platform sandals. (Pencil skirts and ankle straps go together like cake with frosting; everything just gets yummier.) On the day I wore this outfit I dressed up the look a bit more with a bright scarf and simple black clutch.
- Scarf – Vintage
- T-shirt – The Gap
- Skirt – J Crew
- Shoes – Ed Hardy via Off Broadway
- Clutch – Nordstroms
I searched around the web for a few other ideas on how to wear denim pencil skirts. At this moment in late June there are only a couple posts out there. The author of Outfit Posts likes to wear hers with a cardigan and a polka dot blouse. You can see Eva Mendes wearing a super-tight version with a tie front cotton shirt here. (I think I might have gone up a size myself.) Meanwhile one of the authors of Two Shopper Moms takes a more conservative approach by pairing her denim skirt with a pretty lacy sweater.
Denim pencil skirts are a mix of casual, conservative and sexy. I love the look. What do you think? I would love to hear your thoughts.

I love the way you’ve styled your denim skirt in this post. It’s really a very sophisticated look. I especially love the way you tied the scarf around your neck. So chic! Whenever I think of denim I always think of jean pants or shorts, but I really must give more thought to the skirt. You wear it so well!!
As to your comment on my blog, I actually did stop blogging for awhile. My boyfriend and I recently bought a house so the last few months have been so hectic that I haven’t had much time. I’m finally starting to get into a better routine of posting and commenting so you’ll be hearing more from me now! XO

Heather the denim skirt suits you perfectly! I love the way you styled it and it’s super slimming. I don’t have any (but then again I barely have any summer clothes and am slowly rebuilding my wardrobe). My only concern is that it seems like it would be not soft enough to sit in–and unfortunately I sit much of the day–but maybe I haven’t found the right one yet.

I don’t usually wear this skirt when I’m doing a lot of sitting. It’s more of a going out or running errands sort of skirt. But then I usually work in oversized cut-offs or my velour sweat pants – not pretty but comfortable.

ooh, I’d like to try it with a tee! The last pencil denim I had was just a bit too tight…and I haven’t found the replacement for it yet. this looks great.

I know you buy a lot of your clothes second-hand, so it might be difficult to find this kind of skirt. It’s been years since this shape has been available in denim. However Not Your Daughter’s Jeans makes a nice pencil skirt too. I’ve seen a few on sale.

Thank you Lia! The platforms are a lot of fun, but they’re not that easy to walk in, so I wear them just for fun outings and dinner.

This is such a great go-to style…I have a Ralph Lauren denim skirt which fits me a lot like this one does you and I love to wear it with a black T. I like the way you styled the scarf as well!!

Thanks Pam!
You look fabulous in the denim pencil skirt- very figure flattering!
I really am not sure how I would style it on myself. I feel like pencil skirts require some serious heel height and this throws me off a bit when thinking how I would wear the skirt.
It is probably requires some testing on my end!

They do look better with heels, but I think even a low heel would work. I like denim skirts so much that I just wear them with flats when necessary, but the super high heels are fun once in a while.

I really like the scarf here, really adds to the outfit. Ive never been able to really get into denim skirts – I had one I bought off ebay with a massive exposed zipper down the front, & i loved it but it was too long & i never ended up wearing it , sigh… seems you’ve got it happening though
Sometimes I think you just have to wait until the right moment comes around. Longer skirts are coming in again so your long denim skirt might look really good right now. Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a comment too!
I love a pencil denim skirt, so flattering.
You look gorgeous, my deares Heather.
