Window Shopping and Dinner in Old Town Pasadena

Old Town Pasadena is a lively shopping district filled with great restaurants and trendy clothing stores.  It’s located in beautiful Pasadena, a charming city known for its craftsman cottages a wide tree-lined streets set beneath the hills North-East of Los Angeles. Old Town is also a designated historic district. Some buildings date back to the 1880′s – old for Los Angeles! When my parents moved to southern California in the 1970′s the area was considered very seedy, even dangerous, but in the early 1980′s money for redevelopment flowed in, tasteful refurbishment of the lovely 1920′s facades occurred, and now the area is revitalized and charming. Old Town is a favorite destination for the whole Fonseca family.  When we’re not here with the kids my husband and I stop by together to try new restaurants and peek into the stores. There’s everything here from an Apple Store, to the foodie’s heaven Sur La Table, to the usual mall shops like Zara and The Body Shop.

This weekend my husband and I decided to try a new restaurant.  Not knowing just where to go, we looked at Yelp for ideas.  We wandered past neon purses at H&M and mannequins in peach outfits at American Apparel on our way to check out The Himalayan Cafe.  As I entered the dining area delightful, spicy scents surrounded me and I knew we’d found a winner. We tried the house specialty: small meat filled dumplings called “mo-mo”. We also ordered some naan and a mixed tandoori plate.  All were very good, but the eggplant curry was the best I’ve ever tasted.

I’m sure we’ll be going back for more.

Have you ever been to Old Town Pasadena?  Is there a Himalayan restaurant in your town?

Super cool post. I’d love to visit Los Angeles and see all of the different towns. I’ve never tried Himalayan food either..!
Big fan of the menswear jacket with the cool printed dress.

Thanks so much Sarah! I’m glad you like my outfit. I like mixing menswear with short skirts because it tends to tone down the overt sexiness of the look.

You look so chic yet comfy in your beautiful dress.
Glad you like the restaurant. My Nepalese co-worker gave it a “thumbs up” but I haven’t tried it yet. Don’t get to Pasadena all that often.

I remember going to “Old Town” in the 70s. Yes, it was scary — lots of bums. I got a great aluminum measuring cup at the junk store at Colorado x Fair Oaks in 1976. I still have it!

I lived in Pasadena (and environs) from 82 – 94 so I watched Old Town morf into its current incarnation. One of my favorite moments (pre-redevelopment) was when Colorado between Fair Oaks and S. Pasadena Ave was turned into “Little Italy” for a movie shoot. Driving through, I did a double-take on a store front that had “Social Club” painted on the door. I thought, “I don’t remember that being there” and then I realized what was going on. Ah, Hollywood, messing with our perceptions!

What wonderful recollections! I don’t remember old town before redevelopment at all. All of a sudden we just started going to Il Fornaio for dinner and I was like “where did all this come from?”. Funny. I love it now though.

So funny when my new husband and i were visiting from the east coast on our extended honeymoon we stayed in Pasadena. We loved it so much we decided to move to Southern California. It was early January, the temperature was in the upper 80′s being from the east we couldn’t believe it. Yes, I love Pasadena, you can find me at the MAC store, Sur La Table, Apple or Lulu Lemon which I love.
