Hit the Beach in Style

It’s summer!  Time to hit the beach. I’m lucky.  I live within driving distance of some of the most celebrated beaches in the world. Yes, the places where the ocean meets the land in California really are as wide and sandy as they are on television. There is, however, one big difference between the fantasy of TV and the reality of the beach: the people.  On the tube perfect blond beach bunnies and hunky, muscled life guards populate the sand but in real life the scene is much more varied. Sure, the life guards are super-fit and the bunnies frolic in the waves, but they’re joined by their grandmas and grandpas, parents, aunts and little nieces and nephews too. Everyone is having fun in the sun and no one cares if your cellulite is showing, because everyone over the age of 22 is showing off something imperfect and they’re doing it with aplomb.

So leave your insecurities in the car, grab a bikini and hit the beach! In case you’re still a little hesitant here are some photos to inspire you. They were taken in Capitola by the Sea, a charming little town in central California.  My family and I were on vacation here for a couple of days but I could have relaxed on the sand for weeks.

Yeah, that’s me above in my cut-offs and a bikini looking not-very-coordinated. (And above that a photo of my own beach boys.) I was going to wear a chic little kaftan thingy but it just felt too pretentious.  California beach style is very laid-back.  If there is anyplace in the world where anybody can wear cut-off jeans with confidence the little beach communities of the Sunshine State are it.

I’m wearing yet another new bikini, this one by Becca. The print is a wild, multi-colored stained-glass butterfly motif on black.  It feels as elegant as a black bikini, only its colorful and fun. I think the one-shoulder design makes it feel sophisticated.  Honestly I don’t know if I would have bought it myself because it’s a bit too skimpy and my insecurities get the best of me, but my husband insisted it looked great, and he should know right? It looks skimpy but it’s tight and supportive.  I don’t feel like it’s about to fall off every time I get in the water, a plus when frolicking in the surf.

  • Bikini – Becca (You can find the top here and the bottom here. A more covered version of the bottom can be found here.)
  • Hat – Unknown brand
  • Shorts – Originally Gap Jeans. I cut them off myself.

I found more beach inspiration on my trip to Capitola. Check out the trendy zebra print bag in the photo below.

Zebras were hot! I spotted these two on the sand.

How chic is this black and white print tote?  The woman who carried it to the beach with her toddlers told me she found it at a local florist shop.

Are you going to the beach this summer? What are you wearing?

Look at you and all your fab bikinis! Lukus and I finally went and sat by the lake last night. We haven’t spent time ont he beach yet (although it is literally 30seconds from our building!), but hopefully soon! (So much left to do settling in wise and unfortunately we have both been swamped with other stuff!)

    Great photos!

I’m sure if it’s really warm and you have some time you’ll find yourself there. My husband and I have no choice really. We need to do something with the kids! They can’t just sit in front of their computers all day and the beach is an easy outing.

Ah it’s nice to see some Califronia beaches! I was thinking the other day that I’m following a couple of California bloggers, but you are the only one that actually blogs about the beaches!
I live in a coastal town here in Greece (just 12,5 miles off Athens) and the beach is within a walking distance from my house, though I prefer to drive 4 miles further to a much better beach. So practically I can hit the beach every afternoon after returning from work and that scene you describe with whole families hitting the beach, I see it every day!
Personally I wear just my bikini and a cover up (either a sharong or a see through dress from Accessorize). This year I was gifted a bit floppy hat, but haven’t had the opportunity to wear it yet (because in the afternoon there’s not so much sun)!

It takes a bit longer for me to get to the beach. I’m about an hour away with L.A. traffic, but that’s considered a short drive here. I’ll be writing more about the beach soon, because it seems to be one of those summers where we are heading there every weekend. I love it! But I would so love to go to Greece and see the beaches there too. I’m sure they’re different from the cold water and fog of the pacific.

I am in Southern California, I plan to go down to San Diego this week. Maybe I can come up with a beach theme post. Thanks for the idea!

I love the beach pictures and the bikini looks great on you too. I don’t think I’ll be hitting the beach anytime soon though the UK summer is a bit of a wash out so far…

I’ve read that it’s been really, really cold in England this year! It’s often not all that warm at the beach here either, but it gets hot inland for sure. Well, maybe you’ll get somewhere warm and wonderful for some sand soon.

I love this!!! Your intro was so great. What a wonderful post appreciating the different colors, sizes, shapes and ages on the beach. :) I can’t believe how supportive that swimsuit top is — I’ll have to check it out for sure! And you’ve just inspired me to make my own cut-offs!!!

I have to agree with Steph, great intro to the post, and beside when you’re at the beach it’s all about having a good time, I wouldn’t waste my time comparing for sure!

You look absolutely stunning – the top part of the bikini is gorgeous!

Just slowly taking in all the photos here and the pops of colour -the zebra tents – how cool?!

Was also at the beach for the second time this year – it’s been so hot, I can’t believe I haven’t been every weekend!

Sometimes life just gets the better of us and we don’t make it to the beach. I spent many summers without the sand in my toes. This summer is looking good though. Hope you make it there soon.

Aw thanks Silvia! I thought I looked rather mis-matched, but I had a great day and it really didn’t matter anyway.

You are just summer fabulous over here. Gorgeous bod and I love these images. I’m due for a short holiday soon for my bday, but haven’t the slightest idea to where yet. These photos are definitely inspiring, i will take this statement as you’ve simply put it, “So leave your insecurities in the car, grab a bikini and hit the beach.” :-)

I try to avoid the beach as much as possible!! :) I;m sure I;ll end up there at least once this summer. My girls seem to like it I try to cover up as much as possible and not just for insecurity reasons. It only takes minutes for me to burn!! :)

Athletica makes some great sun shirts and long shorts. They’re very well made and have SPF right in the fabric. Great for long hours in the sun. I don’t usually burn if I apply sunblock regularly, but usually there’s some spot that gets forgotten and I get a little burn. Sigh.
