An Elegant Beach Coverup

A beach coverup isn’t really a necessity, but I wouldn’t dream of going to the shore without something to layer over my bathing suit. A coverup can be practical, pretty or sophisticated, and like a chic beach tote its a great way to express your personal style. Often I take a practical approach and wear a big white cotton shirt over my bathing suit. Over the last few years I’ve found that an inexpensive sundress can double as a pretty coverup especially when I’m feeling insecure about my figure.  But this year I wanted something a little more elegant. For years I draped a long printed sarong around my hips and felt it was the pinnacle of elegant beach style, but the glamorous classic does get a little boring after, oh, a decade. One of the trends that hit the beach this year is the lacy beach tunic. It’s a flattering and feminine look that I gravitated toward immediately.

Brrrrr! It was cold on the beach when we took these photos and this lacy tunic did nothing to keep me warm. Although pretty and very sophisticated it just isn’t a very practical garment. The coverup offers no sun protection either, but I love how my colorful bikini peeks out through the lace. I think this is a case of style trumping practicality. On the other hand it does cover the body enough to wear off the beach if needed. With a pair of colorful sandals and a big hat and I wouldn’t feel awkward walking to a little beach shack for lunch in this outfit.

My swim suit and coverup are both by Becca. The company also makes the same style beach coverup in hot pink, white, and bright blue.  There’s a maxi-dress version as well for those of us who would prefer a bit more coverage.

What’s your favorite beach coverup?

This is pretty! I tend to go with something that can double as a dress/romper so that I can grab a meal or something near the shore.

A dress is a good idea too. This little number is a new addition to my beach wardrobe.

    Ooh La La! Tres Chic!

I go for MAJOR coverage and wear a huipil (mexican shift) and a hat. I can go everywhere in it, and I do!

I so need a beach coverup–love yours and the geometric graphicness of it.

This is how I’ll start going to the beach from now on, I think: an elegant cover up is the way to go!

    Hey dear,

I agree a beach cover-up is always a must. I`m mostly going for a long cotton blouse or simply a pareo.

You lace shirt is really intriguing. I LOVE your photos; the dark, wild sea, the wind in your hair, the ambivalent black lace (which not really see-through but not really covered) and your Monas-Lisa-ish facial expression. There is something existential, deep and mysterious in the pictures.

    Have a nice weekend, Jen

PS: Oh I need a beach vacation SOOOO BAD! My last real one was in 2007 :(

Haha Heather. Isn’t that what ‘real’ models do (posing in the cold). You are well on your way at becoming a professional 40+ model! Great photos and great, fun cover up. As you say not the most practical, but sometimes you just got to have fun!
