Summer Makeup Favorites

It’s now late August. Summer is winding down. Autumn fashion fills the stores and the beauty blogs review the deliciously dark makeup colors of fall. Unfortunately, here in Los Angeles the weather isn’t playing nice. It’s still high summer hereabouts and will be for a while. Thankfully I found some great new summer makeup items this season. These new favorites are helping me to look attractive through the heat waves that keep pounding the southland.

Disclosure: I haven’t been paid to post this article. I bought all this makeup with my own money and use each one frequently. However, affiliate links are imbedded in the post. If you buy any of this makeup through the link I’ll receive a small commission. Thanks for your support!

Summer Makeup: Golden Goddess

Metallic touches looks amazing on a warm summer evening. I especially like gold and bronze as we transition into fall. It reminds me of the colors of autumn without being dark or heavy.

  1. Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips in Brown Eye Candy is great for creating a sultry, bronze, evening eye look. I’ve worn it to almost every evening event this summer.
  2. Another new find this summer is the rather spectacular ULTA Eye Crayon. “Toasted” is a flattering bronze color with some shimmer. It works as both a liner or shadow depending upon the look you’re after. I like wearing it as a thick eye liner with some gold shadow on my eyelids. It actually stays put all day even in intense heat.
  3. Everyone loves the new L’Oreal infallible 24 hour eye shadow except me. I’ve tried most of the colors and find that they don’t last all that long on my lids. The one exception is the fantastic glittery gold shadow “Eternal Sunshine”. I like wearing it alone or over the Urban Decay eyeshadow primer for an extra pop of golden shimmer.
  4. I like wearing bright colors on my toes and nails in the summer, but I’m still not very good at painting them myself. When I must do a self manicure I turn to softer, more forgiving colors.Essie Nail Polish in “Shifting Power”is a very pretty golden nail polish that’s easy to apply. Mistakes are not very noticeable and it looks pretty with my metallic accessories. (Unfortunately this color is a limited edition and no longer available online but you still might be able to find it at a local store.)
  5. Essie Luxeffects Nail Polish in “As Gold as it Gets” is a sparkly gold top coat. I like to wear it over “Shifting Power” as an extra pop of sparkle.
  6. Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion in Greed is a gorgeous gold shadow primer. Too Faced used to make colored primers and I loved them, but they’ve since been discontinued. I was so happy when I found this. I can wear it alone or layer it with shadow.

Summer Makeup: Fresh and Pretty

I love a fresh, pretty, “no makeup” look in the summer but I still need something to hide imperfections, cover dark circles and give my face some color.  These beauty products deliver results in a light, airy, summery way.

  1. L’Oreal Telescopic Explosion Mascara is a new find for me. I love the funny looking wand. It’s easy to apply and creates really long black lashes. Dramatic lashes are always good, no matter what the weather. (Update September 2013 – unfortunately this fun mascara seems to have been discontinued.)
  2. One blush I’m loving at the moment is NYX Cream Blush in Tickled. It’s a sparkly coral color that adds a touch of fun to my cheeks. It’s a bit too much when worn with a full face of makeup, but by itself with some tinted moisturizer and mascara it looks fabulous. I never wear bronzer because I feel like it makes my face look dirty. This is as close as I get to that “sun touched glow” everyone talks about.
  3. The first BB cream I ever tried is still my favorite. ULTA sells Too Faced Tinted Beauty Balm and although it’s pricier than my usual drugstore brands this thick, creamy, tinted moisturizer with SPF 20 is worth the price. It’s just enough foundation to even out my skin tone and it stays put in the heat.
  4. Sonia Kashuk Super Sheer Liquid Tint Blush in Peony creates a very natural look that is best over no makeup, or minimal makeup, which is why I love it in the summer. It’s a gel but the bright color makes up for the sheerness of the product.
  5. Olay Regenerist Eye Regenerating Cream with a Touch of Concealer has been around for a while but it’s a new find for me. On the hottest of hottest days I simply put sunblock on my face and neck, pat a bit of this around my eyes, add blush, mascara and whatever lipstick I’m in the mood for at the moment, and I’m good to go.

Gah, these items and photos are all gorgeous. I normally keep my makeup pretty natural and light, so the second look is more my style. Though, I like to add a little sparkle on the eyes now and then 🙂

There’s a lot of great makeup at the drugstore that can take care of that urge for a little sparkle without breaking the bank! I highly recommend the two powder eyeshadows I talk about in the article. They’re both great and less than $10.

I have been trying to maintain a pretty fresh look this summer (I look exhausted all the time otherwise!). That sheer blush is enticing— will check it out!

Sonia Kashuk is sold at Target and it’s affordable. The gel blush is nice but it doesn’t work well on top of foundation, but as a pick me up over bare skin it’s perfect! If you like it let me know.

I’m glad you like the look. I will be right back to wearing it this summer I’m sure.
