Resale stores have changed how I shop. For years, even when I was staying home with my kids and money was really tight, I only rarely went to thrift stores and when I did had a hard time finding anything I wanted to buy. Now it seems like many small stores selling second-hand goods have popped up all over town. They carry everything from very affordable mass marketed clothing to expensive designer duds to interesting vintage pieces. The only problem is if you fall in love with something that’s too small you’re out of luck. Purses, however, are one-size-fits-all. A few weeks ago my favorite local consignment store, Ampersand, removed the clothes and shoes from their retail space and replaced them with a sea of purses, creating a kind of handbag heaven. My husband came with me to photograph what I’ve since dubbed “purse porn”.
Not all the tables were filled with purses. One displayed an array of finger foods, and another served chilled, bubbly prosceco. A belly full of sandwiches and wine makes it more fun to shop.
I planned to buy something at the party, but I didn’t just want to go in and pick whatever I liked. I have a lot of purses and tend to grab the same kind of thing over and over unless I’m careful. I went through my collection before the party and noticed that almost all my bags have silver hard wear. I have a lot of gold tones in my closet, and no purse to support them, so I decided to look for something with golden touches. I loved the vintage tapestry bag below.
This little beaded vintage clutch caught my attention too.
But wait, what’s this?
Oh, and then there’s gathered and tasselled gold handbag.
I can’t get both. Which one should I choose?
I’ll show you what I bought in my next post!
Have you ever been to a retail party? Would you like to go to one all about purses? What do you think of the two purses I picked out. Which one would you choose?

I would have loved to be with you there, ahhhhhhhhhhhhh
As you well say, absolute heave, ahhhhhhhhh
have a lovely weekend, Heather.

It was pretty fabulous Sacramento. I hope you have a great weekend too!
I love retail parties— they seem to combine my favorite things! And this one looks especially fun—- mostly because I am currently loving anything that is “one size fits all”!

LOL! Alexis your figure will be back in no time at all. But purses are nice because they never tell you that weight gain has occurred. I do love that about them.
I would love to go to a retail party. i don’t think any store in my town even does this, how sad.
It was a new thing for me too Marla. I’ve never gone to anything quite like this! Perhaps you should suggest it to the owner of a small boutique in your town?
wooooooooaaaaaaaaaah. the table full of sparkling clutches is amazing! best party, ever
. so glad you’re shopping second hand shops! it’s such a great way to shop and i do think the selection has gotten so much broader and definitely more accessible.

It’s nice that these affordable resale places have opened up near me. There have always been a few around but they war never affordable. This one has a large range. She sells cute little bags for around $30 and really expensive designer pieces as well. It’s fun!

OOOO, I’m intrigued! I’ve actually never been to a retail party, though when Bryn & I were at the Michael Kors store in Vegas, they gave us glasses of champagne. Haha, not sure if that counts?? But it looks like you had a great time, and this is yet another store in LA I’ve yet to visit! I like the purse on the right more, but the one on the left is more functional. Hmm…

I’ve been to a couple retail parties before but this one was the most fun. Next time I’d like to bring more friends! Chosen purse will be on the blog tomorrow.
Purseheaven? I want all the bags in the first image … or, I want them all!
HI Ulia-Marie. Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a comment. The first photo is really like purse heaven isn’t it?

This event looked so fun! I would be in there for hours. When I go shopping, it’s like I’m doing a waltz with the store. It takes me a while to decide on something. When I’m not shopping for myself, it’s even harder. The black bag is nice, but I hope you got the gold one.

Hi Patricia! It’s nice to see you again. In the end I got the darker bag. I still think about the gold one though, and I do plan on finding a pretty gold clutch in the future. I just feel like my wardrobe needs more gold. And the party was really festive.
