A Rainy Birthday

Last weekend I celebrated another year on planet earth. I cannot say I am especially excited by the number 43, but there isn’t much I can do about it other than lie, which I’ve always found rather pathetic, so my husband and I went out and drank champagne instead.

I awoke on the dreaded day to the sound of raindrops. For most people this might have been a sign to stay in bed, but I love the rain. I almost never happens here in Los Angeles, and when it does I’m always so happy. The pit-a-pat of drops on the roof gave the morning a magical feeling, which I spent relaxing with the family over a big weekend brunch. Later, after my parents had picked up the children, my husband and I sloshed through glittering, rainy streets with umbrellas in tow to sip red wine and nibble on cheese at a local wine bar. Because he knows I love to shop we drove to my favorite resale store where I tried on dozens of dresses and picked out a favorite. (I’m wearing my birthday gift in the photos.) In the evening we went out to dinner and a movie. I can’t imagine a more perfect day.

Wearing:

  • Umbrella from Target
  • Black leather Jacket from The Gap
  • Black dress by Trina Turk via Ampersand
  • Black tights from Target
  • Black boots by Lou
  • Purse from Nordstrom

How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

Happy birthday, Heather! It sounds like you had a wonderful day. I love the rain, too — it reminds me of home. 🙂 I can only hope I look as good as you do at 43!

Happy birthday Heather. 43 is still young! It’s a very black outfit that looks surprisingly good on you. I love your new fabulous dress and it looks so nice with the leather coat. I would never be able to get my husband to shop with me, but yes, diner is usually something we do as well. Although I hardly ever do it with my husband on my birthday, since we always happen to be in different countries at that time (holiday time…)

Age is all relative. I felt so old at 30, now I look back and wonder what I was thinking. I’m sure it’ll be the same way in ten years! Anyway, I feel young, it’s just that the face that looks back in the mirror isn’t so young anymore.
I’m glad you like the all-black outfit on me. I spent my youth in black, black and more black. It used to look REALLY good on me, but I hesitate these days. Recently I’ve been in an all-black mood though. It just feels right. I’m sure it will change though!

Heather, you look so beautiful in this outfit. Everything is perfect. And your perfect day would be my perfect day.
But what I like most are the dimples in your cheeks. They say you are such a friendly person.

Thanks Greetje! I get the dimples from my dad, and I hope I’m a friendly person. I certainly try to be!

Happy Birthday Heather. Beautiful as always and I suspect that you pretty much look the same as you would have on your 33rd only even better.

Happy Birthday! You still look amazing as you do in every photo. I love the dress you picked out as well it’s such a classic, chic piece.

Hope you enjoy the rain, but hey, I’d trade you raindrops for sunshine any day of the week.

Aw, thanks Arash! Glad you like my new dress. My husband picked it out. (: As for the sunshine, if you had it every day of the year you’d get bored of it too. It doesn’t rain much here, so when it does it’s an event.

Thanks Jeannie! I’ll keep that in mind. I’m not feeling so old today now that THE DAY has past. Yikes. It’s the day thats the worst part. Once it’s over I’m back to my usual perspective.
