A Summer Dress in the Fall

Recently I’ve noticed that many of my favorite bloggers have pulled their summer frocks out of the closet to pair them with cozy sweaters and boots. It’s not difficult to see why. As the days get colder, shorter and darker I long for the long, lazy days of summer too. A pretty print dress brings with it a bit of warm-weather nostalgia.  In the meantime I’ll wear this summer dress in the fall and dream of warm weather bliss.

I bought this pretty, printed silk frock when the weather was in the high 90’s. At the time I thought it was a practical hot weather purchase but it has turned out to be much more. The silk fabric and floaty design kept me cool in the late summer heat, and now that the days are short and brisk it looks great paired with a little denim jacket and boots. The dress is versatile enough to wear in summer as well as fall.

These photos were taken at the Los Angeles river. It was once a long, dry, concrete channel with a trickle of water dribbling down the middle, but over the last decade or so the Friends of the L.A. River have worked with volunteers and the city to revitalize and replant the waterway. Gone are the iconic car races, but in its place are herons, ducks, willows and reeds of all sorts. Families and people on horseback come here for long walks or bike rides. It’s also my new favorite place for photos!

Wearing:

  • Big chain necklace and earrings from Gilt
  • The watch was a gift from my aunt
  • Thrifted denim jacket
  • Thrifted python clutch
  • Silk dress from Ampersand (a local consignment store.)
  • Boots by Lou

Do you wear summer dresses in the fall? How do you do it?

I love your husband’s photography, it’s just gorgeous. A jean jacket over any outfit looks good to me, I love it!

I agree. The photography is gorgeous. Love this look.

Lots of your favourites in this outfit like denim.
I presume the lovely dress works so well in this season because of the colour and print.
Are you bare legged in those boots? And if so.. Is that not cold? Or is the temperature in your place still reasonable? In The Netherlands it is 0 degrees Celcius.

I don’t think it ever gets to freezing in Los Angeles, certainly not during the day! No, it’s still pretty warm here though it gets kind of chilly in the winter and spring. Then I’ll have to wear tights for sure.

I like the soft blues and greys in these photos. I just got a flash for my camera, so I’m excited to try it out, your husbands photos inspire me! your makeup looks so good as always, that can make such a big difference for photos.

    • Heather Fonseca December 3, 2012 at 5:46 pm #

Thanks Shanti. I’m actually wearing a ton of makeup in these photos, but you can’t tell. The flash eats it up. I still struggle with creating makeup looks for photograph. What looks good yet natural in real life looks like nothing on film. What looks a little too heavy in real life is almost enough on film. I’ve yet to perfect makeup for photography. Sigh.

That dress really does transition well into LA fall! I really like it with the jean jacket… nicely styled!!!!!!

Alas, it has been somewhat colder here. And, having given birth 15 days ago let’s be honest: I am wearing sweats and leggings! Don’t totally freak out- I haven’t done it in public (yet), but until I get more than 2 1/2hrs of sleep straight I will struggle to pull myself together!

I remember that Alexis. Don’t worry. You’ll be back on your feet soon. They don’t stay tiny babies forever. I promise!

Thank you so much my dear. I love to layer, and a lightweight dress makes it easier even when it’s warm.

    Great boots.
Here in the subtropics, I wear same dresses year round, adding or removing light layers as needed. Although I’m rarely able to wear dresses without leggings, even in the brutal heat, because it is super windy where I live! 😉

    • Heather Fonseca December 3, 2012 at 5:42 pm #

Interesting! It must be hard to wear leggings with everything, especially if it’s warm!

It’s great that you still can wear your summer pieces even when the weather gets chilly. I saw a girl rocking a maxi dress and some grungy looking boots the other day.

Certainly not my cup of tea but worked and was a perfect illustration of how to wear your wardrobe all year round. Great post!

Thanks Arash! I like the maxi dress in winter look too, though I haven’t brought mine out and I’m not sure I would like it with boots. Hmm. I’ll have to try.

    Hi Heather!
Agree with all the comments about the photographs: always gorgeous – with great light.
About wearing a dress in Summer? I wear some even in Winter (lucky me who live in Florida). My favorite dress is a white one with a navy buttoned sweater.
Enjoy the weather and the River (and make sure there are not making an other Terminator movie when you are having shooting sessions ;-). It looks so much like the decor of the movie).

I think they’ve shot a lot of movies in the LA river. I didn’t realize Terminator was one of them! I always think of that giant ant movie “Them”. Anyway, glad you like the photos. It’s usually a little too cold here in the winter for summer dresses, but the fall is usually warm enough to wear something lightweight.

I rarely wear dresses but recently I wore a light pink sleeveless dress that I have. It has a black pattern on it so I paired it with a cropped black sweater, black tights and short black boots. I think it worked! 🙂
