Minimalism in Fashion

Minimalism in FashionSometimes I wish my closet was stripped bare, with only a few, perfect, simple clothes in black, white, and maybe tan staring back at me. Okay, okay! Maybe some red too. They say to be careful what you wish for, and my minimalist day dream might be coming true very soon. This month my family and I will be moving out of our home to get it ready to sell. In the meantime we’ll be living at my Mother-in-Law’s small backyard studio. It was the previous owners art studio, and it has a little kitchen and a bathroom. I’m going to have to pack away a lot of clothes and only bring with me the pieces I wear the most. What? I’ll be bored out of my mind in a month? Probably. But planning is key, and I have lots of inspiration to keep me going.

My Favorite looks and articles on the subject

  1. A big white coat with oversized black buttons worn over black shorts looks fresh and fun.
  2. High-waisted jeans, men’s shirts and expensive, pointy-toe shoes are all this wealthy, chic, Angeleno wears. I wish my style was so simple.
  3. A fabulous, unadorned, t-shirt with an unusual cut is a good addition to the chic minimal wardrobe.
  4. What list of great minimal looks would be complete without mentioning the home of minimal cool? Odyssey Home shows us how to be minimal without ever being boring.
  5. This outfit of white jeans, black blazer, and red boots makes me want to get my white jeans down from the summer storage area ASAP!
  6.  Have you seen The Divintus? If you like minimalism in fashion, especially the cool, punky, kind, check out her blog.
  7. white top, black skirt, and fabulous shoes are all a girl really needs.
  8. There’s minimalism, and then there’s minimalism. Here’s an interesting article on what the word means in terms of fashion and personal style.
  9. To make a minimal outfit more interesting choose a collection of interesting shapes and unexpected accessories, like this girl wearing a black crop top, knee length white skirt, and black gloves.
  10. Need more inspiration? Check out this wish list of black and white outfits.

I’m honored to be mentioned here. Thank you!
Minimal style is an indirect result of my aesthetic; more a side effect. I dislike clutter and things that get in the way physically and visually. I’m petite and those “extras” just don’t work on my frame.
    Nice post. 🙂

I love your style and I think it works really well for you. When I was young I was much more of a minimalist, but then I started to work in toy design and it wore off on me. It’s like if there are less than three colors in an outfit something is wrong! I just can’t help myself.

I like black and white but don’t wear it very often because of the white. I’m so fair skinned that I find it hard to wear just whit eon top.

Check the link in number 6. I don’t think it is what you intended.

Wow – seems like you’ll be roughing it but I guess it will all work out in the end if you can sell your house. Good luck!

Hi Stacey. Thanks so much for catching #6. I was looking at Wacum computer screens simultaneously, hence the mess up. I’ve corrected the link now.
Our house is super-small and we’ve been living in it for 16 years. It’s been time for a change for years but neither my husband or I have much tolerance for the long-term discomfort selling/buying a house entails. We tried selling a few years ago and could only handle 3 months of it! I’m hoping that moving out will help. It’s going to be an adventure!

    • Heather Fonseca February 12, 2013 at 8:37 pm #

My house is less than 900 square feet. I know. I know. It would be a palace in Manhattan but in LA it’s just a postage stamp, and we’re bursting at the seams. I really hope it works this time. We tried to move once before but we couldn’t sell and we couldn’t find anything that we could afford to buy. Sigh. It’s tough out there, and in L.A. believe it or not, it hasn’t changed much. Houses are still expensive.

Wow! This will be quite the family adventure! We’ve been living in my parents’ home for the past couple months and it has been nice to have family time- especially with the baby.

Meanwhile, the wardrobe situation has been mine as well (a lot of my stuff was in boxes from the move/pregnancy)… it has caused me to get creative and when I finally went through it this past weekend I ended up giving away loads. I just didn’t want extra- just pieces that were of value.

I remember after I had my children I went through a big closet purge too, but it took me a while to loose the baby weight so that was part of it. So frustrating when you can’t wear your old clothes! But I know what you mean about having pieces of value. The quality pieces in my wardrobe definitely get a lot of use.

Thanks for sharing this great content, I really enjoyed the insign you bring to the topic, awesome stuff!

I find that when you have a few pieces you truly love you won’t get bored at all!

I mostly wear black, some white and occasionally a touch of grey. It’s nice to play with textures in black, instead of colours.

I will have to think about textures instead of colors. To tell you the truth I don’t always know what do do with texture. I think it’s from years of designing dolls, I create all my outfits around color. Texture tends to be an afterthought, but your right that it can be a whole element unto itself. Thanks for the advice!

I’d love to have a minimalistic wardrobe, but I know me…I can’t do that!! What I do though is get through my clothes twice a wear and give away those that I’m not wearing a lot!

    • Heather Fonseca February 12, 2013 at 8:24 pm #

I feel the same way. I love minimalist but I just can’t seem to do it.

  8. SACRAMENTO February 12, 2013 at 1:04 am #

Baroque is a great adjective. It describes your style perfectly! Thank you for the nice compliments. I am on a roll with the drawings and can’t wait to do more.

  9. Marla February 12, 2013 at 3:07 am #

I consider myself a minimalist and love wearing neutral colors. I really have to force myself to wear something other than black or grey. Never wear too many accessories at one time. I think that makes women look too frumpy.

    • Heather Fonseca February 12, 2013 at 8:23 pm #

I embraced color a few years ago and I can’t go back now, but for years it was black, black and more black!

I really long to be a minimalist, but I guess it is just not me. When I try to go that direction, I constantly get pulled back to the color and jewelry and accessories. I am constantly attempting to live in the middle because I love both worlds. I enjoyed this post and your illustrations are so much fun!!

    Yay! Another sketch!

I will never be a minimalist. I am a maximalist.

A minimal moment that I remember was the few months in 94 that I house sat a case study house (50’s modern) at the top of Nichols Canyon off of Mulholland. Bare bones — the cats, no furniture, all my “stuff” in storage, reduced wardrobe — kind of like camping, but in a house. Perhaps if you think of your “in transit” wardrobe as just that — a “trip” to your mother-in-law’s!

Best of luck with all the changes! If you need boxes, I can bring you a bunch from work.

First, boxes. YES PLEASE! Second, the outfit. Thinking of it as camping with all the amenities of home is probably about right. The studio is bigger than a trailer, but probably not as big as those huge bus-home things with the pull-outs. You know the one’s I mean. So it will be a lot like camping. The good news is I can probably leave my closet at home intact until the end.

I think that minimalism in Fashion is an adopted concept discovered by french in the early ’60’s 🙂

I like to go though my closet once a month, usually a Saturday. If I haven’t worn it the month before, or it just doesn’t make me go “YEAH!” when I put it on, out it goes. If I can’t use the piece with anything else in my closest, out it goes. I also check color. My weakness is lime. Sometimes I have too much.

    • Heather Fonseca February 14, 2013 at 10:41 am #

Yeah, sometimes I do the same thing, with bright green! I just keep grabbing things in the color and have to remind myself I already have a lot in the color. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment Nina. (:

  19. christy February 23, 2013 at 8:20 pm #

I use to be very minimalistic and wore only black, white and grays… until my husband complained and then my closet exploded with color and patterns. Now I’m reminiscing the good old simple days!

    • Heather Fonseca February 25, 2013 at 10:33 am #

Yeah, I know what you mean Christy. My husband never complained, but more and more color has found it’s way into my wardrobe over the last few years and it’s not always easy to put an outfit together.
