All in Black

Black Motorcycle JacketThere are days when I just want to wear black, black and more black. It’s easy and everyone takes you seriously. I was in a bleak mood when I put together this outfit. I put on the red blouse to lift up my mood, but it was too cold to wear my jacket unzipped. It was interesting because I found the dark, monochromatic colors strangely comforting.

The key with wearing black and more black is to break up the solid color with different textures. Back in the early 90′s when wearing all black was THE look, making sure all the blacks went together was quite a feat. Some blacks are more reddish, some more blue. Black knits can get a bit faded as can black denim. We learned quickly to break up the blacks with different textures. By wearing black leather with a black heavy knit skirt the different shades aren’t noticeable.

And I felt seriously fierce.

    Great look.

I wear all black all the time. Last couple of years I try to shop for “sets” so all elements are made of the same fabric composition for even more unified look.

That is a very good tip! Especially when buying pieces that are meant to be worn together, like suits. But even black knits can be all different blacks. It seems like black would all be black, but there are so many shades of black out there.

Very true. It’s why I try to get my items not only from the same designer but also from the same season. Not always possible when shopping from different sources because my favorite designer likes to repeat his designs each year. And each year the hue of the same looking dress may be different.

Sometimes even the dye lots are different, which makes me crazy. It’s a good idea to buy an all-black outfit at the same time like you do. And of course you always looks smashing in all-black!

I love your jacket and the picture! I also love black and have to force myself to stay away from it…or I will grab it every day.

All black is a go to for me— if we are being honest! But there is something sophisticated about the combination and there is still ways to make it interesting. Be it through texture and cuts or through accessories…

Black on black is always stylish. Great look!
Currently I am trying to get more colours into my wardrobe but black will always be my favourite.

I’m trying to get more color in my wardrobe too, but sometimes wearing all black just feels right! Color takes thought and often my more colorful outfits take much longer to put together than a black on black outfit.

Indeed, you look very cool, modern and on top of the world in this outfit. Beautiful bag too.
I have a lot of black clothes. If I dress all black I can never resist adding a bit of colour through i.e. a necklace.

I’m glad you like the outfit and the bag. That was another happy purchase – on sale! I like wearing a pop of color with black too, and do that on a the regular.

THAT is a great jacket! I’ve been on the hunt for one all season. What’s making it hard? I need gold hardware since I am physically unable to miix metals in an outfit. And under $500. Doesn’t seem to exist. Boo.

I haven’t seen any black leather jackets with gold hard wear anywhere. I did, however, see a biker jacket made from fabric with gold zipper and stuff, though of course I can’t remember where now. Zara maybe? As for mine, as soon as I saw it I grabbed it. It was as close to perfect as I’d seen anywhere, and the price was right! ($340 with a 40% off coupon). I’ll keep my eye out for a gold trimmed version for you Vahni!

Thanks Anne. We wear on the LA river for this one (again). Its a favorite. As for the glasses, I think they’re Prada. Sorry, I forgot to put them on the list. They’re REALLY old. I think I’ve had them for ten years, maybe longer.

    All black everything!

Sometimes nothing else will do. I love wearing head to toe black then if you do add a bit of colour through accessories it really pops! But even if you just stick to all black there is just something really chic about it, as long as it’s not faded.

I think a women in all black with some red nails and lipstick is such a powerful image! Love it!

Glad you like my outfit Arash! I do like all-black sometimes, though I don’t wear it as much as I did when I was younger. In my twenties it was pretty much all I wore: black, black and more black plus some more black. But it was the 90′s and that’s what we did back then.

I’m definitely not a huge fan of all black but I do like this outfit on you. Since it has different textures and a shimmering leather jacket and a fabulous bag, it does not feel all black and boring and gloomy to me. The whole outfit has a wonderful silhouette. It does help that you have colour on your lips too and that you show some skin. And as you say, sometimes you just want to wear black.

Thanks Sylvia. I’m glad you approve! I don’t wear all-black normally, but sometimes it feels so right. I think, like you say, the key is a little skin and some really bright lips.

I LOVE black!! Yes, I agree though that it is hard to get those shades right. Always off! Then when you wash something too many times and it fades – that’s the worst!

Oh I agree. Faded black. Ick. Some girls can pull it off, but you need a bit of a punk rock edge for it to work I think. In the meantime I do my best to keep my blacks, black!

love these photos, just amazing! I really like the all black with the red lips and dramatic sky! I think if you use the right fabrics, like you have here with the leather and the knit skirt, then the blacks work. I recently did a photoshoot with a black hat and black lace dress. When I went to edit the photos, the dress looked navy and the hat black, opps! luckily I was able to give the photos a desaturated look and the dress suddenly matched the hat, thank goodness for photoshop :)

    • Heather Fonseca February 19, 2013 at 4:24 pm #

Lol! Thank goodness for photoshop indeed. It can hide problems for sure, though sometimes my husband gets all arty on me and the colors of my clothes look entirely different from how they look in real life. Whatever, it’s art!
Glad you like the photos and the outfit too.
