Ruffles and Spring Trends

Fashion Illustration - RufflesMy life is totally crazy right now, but in a good way. I will have some photos to share soon, but in the meantime here’s an illustration of one of the new spring trends for 2013: ruffles! Honestly, I feel like I’ve seen it before. Last year I couldn’t wait to dive into the oversized prints, lace dresses, and bright colors that felt so fresh and new. This year I can’t figure out what’s happening. One online source says Bermuda shorts (really? oh dear…) another says stripes and short suits. The only thing I can definitely tell is that black and white will be big, and maybe that’s a relief. I’m left wondering if my pocketbook will be spared this season, or maybe I’ll find a few more perfectly perfect basics to add to my growing collecting of simplicity.

What are your thoughts on this spring’s new looks? Are you inspired?

Ruffles? Wow. What will they think of next?
I’ll confess that I don’t know WHAT the projected trends are for spring.

Another cute sketch! Keep ‘em coming!

I’m concerned about my new attraction to dusty rose, faded burgundy, rust, conte crayon, dusty pink — makeup tones! I am diving in deep, scrutinizing the exact shades, getting the pantone #s, even going to the drugstore to find exact makeup matchups. The reason why to be revealed on the weekend…

I can’t wait to hear why you’re researching dusty colors! I’m still trying to figure out the spring trends. Whatever the newest, hottest, looks are I’m pretty sure that if this year is like other years there will be little of it at retail. On the other hand I really liked last years “trends” so maybe there will be a lot of that at the stores!

Being a fan of black and white since my birth (..) I am quite pleased. The only thing is, it doesn’t suit me that well. Bright colours do and there is plenty of that going around too. So I bought a pair of bright yellow boyfriend trousers and a neon sheer neon pink tunic top, and lots of black and white haha.

I love black and white, but I love all the bright colors too. I think when trends work our way we should buy deeply, because next season it could all be over! I’ll be out and about this spring, if only because the stores in Los Angeles tend to be about a year behind on the trends. I loved last year’s trends so I’m hoping to find all the printed jeans, oversized floral prints and bright colors I couldn’t find last year!

Black and White work for me- I love them in geometric or tribal patterns…… but ruffles? I am not sure that will be a favorite. It is always fun to see what trends catch on once a season is actually upon us!

I’m very much looking forward to seeing how, and if, women gravitate toward the new trends.Black and white is easy, but I’m not so sure about sheer clothing, ruffles or bermuda shorts. I’ve seen all of those talked about online and in magazines. I guess we’ll wait and see!

Honestly? I’m bored with the black and white, I’m liking the bermudas, (its a way for us oldies to twear the short trend!) and ruffles make me feel too big.

Black and white is such a classic that it doesn’t feel all that new does it? I still like it. It’s easy right? As for the bermudas, I’m at the point in life where short-shorts are too young but bermudas are for an older clientele. I’ll just have to wear skirts and wait I think!

I’m not really looking forward to black and white in the summer, but I can see myself rocking a few ruffles. :D

If you like ruffles by all means rock them! It looks like they’ll be hot in the coming months. I don’t personally have a problem with ruffles. I actually like them and used to wear ruffled dresses back in the day, but at 43 I fear I might look silly. I suppose it depends upon the ruffle!

Black and white sound good to me. I’m enjoying your sketches!

Ruffles yes but only if the outfit doesn’t look too girly.
Even I am trying hard to add more colours to my outfit, I always love black & white.
Shorts and bermudas… no way! It has never been my cup of tea and never will be.

I don’t think I’ll be able to do the bermudas and only shorts at the beach or near the beach. As for ruffles, I’m just not sure. It will depend on the piece. As for black and white I’ve got lots too!

I’ve definitely been seeing lots of stripes. I don’t necessarily love stripes. Reminds me of what my mom wears. :)

LOL! I know what you mean Stacey. My mom doesn’t wear stripes, but I’m still a bit hesitant to buy deeply into the trend. I do have a stripe T-shirt that I love, but I’m not sure I want a lot more than that.

your drawings are so awesome, I love it when you share them here! Hope things calm down soon for you! I’m not sure about spring this year, so many things have changed for me in the last couple of years, and seems I am less excited about new clothes for a new season then I used to be. I’m sure some warm spring breezes with change my mind :)

    • Heather Fonseca February 25, 2013 at 10:26 am #

I’m so glad you like my drawings! I’m hoping to do more when I’m more settled. I’m in the process of moving to a new home, so it’s exciting but really crazy. My goal this week is to get back on top of my blog schedule!
Like you I’m not as excited about spring fashion this year, but maybe a trip to the stores will change that!

Yay! More illustrations! I kind of love and hate ruffles, I also am not super inspired by the Spring trends this season. the only 2 that i love love are black and white patterns and clear odd fabrics.

Yeah, I’m not excited about what I’m seeing in the magazines fro spring either. I’m hoping it’s better at retail. As for ruffles, I think I might be beyond the age where they look good.
