One of my favorite gifts is a gift card, and if that gift card gives me a good reason to stop into the wonderful makeup emporium that is Sephora well, that’s even better. For my birthday my Auntie gave me such a gift card, and the first moment I had to spare I ran to the store to see what wonderful goodies they had available.
Upon entering the store I became transfixed by the new line of nail polishes called Sephora X . The display was visually enticing, the colors scrumptuous, and the glitter polishes too beautiful to be true. The colors are arranged in groups that include a lot of gorgeous basics like The New Classics, The Sheers, and The New Neutrals. There are some fun brights in a group called The Electrics. Meanwhile, all kinds of shimmer is addressed in several groups including The Prismatics, The Cosmics, The Sparklers, The Industrialists, and The Pearlescents. But the most interesting group is probably The Toppers. Each polish in this group changes the base nail color rather dramatically. The store sales girl told me the polishes were top quality, and that they lasted for days without chipping. How could I say no?
Sephora X promises to be:
a state-of-the-art line that is breaking new ground on the nail scene. This collection of rich, bold lacquers delivers unprecedented color, spectacular shine and incredible long-wear. Our experts scour the globe for the most innovative ingredients, materials and technology so you can experience never-before-seen effects first. So eXplosive. So eXceptional. One coat changes everything.
I purchased the intoxicatingly pretty gold and pale pink glitter mix called “Ice Princess” and went home to paint my nails.
Results? In order to get the same intense glittery look that the bottle suggests (as seen in the first photo) I needed to apply three coasts of polish. It looked fabulous but…
It chipped almost immediately.
It seems to me that the cheaper the polish, the better it lasts on my nails, and at around $11 Sephora X is definitely not cheap. I do love the color of the polish and I’ve never seen anything like it anywhere before or since, but it only lasted one day. I even tried wearing it over another polish that I know lasts several days on my nails. (In the photo above you can see the color worn over a sheer gold from Essie.) It chipped just as fast.
Oh well. It looked pretty for a few hours.
The problem doesn’t seem to have happen to everyone who’s reviewed the polishes, so it might just be me and my impossibly soft nails. The PolishAholic reviewed the line and posted photos of several colors but didn’t have any problems with them chipping. Nicole Reviews Beauty loves her bottle of Sephora X “Hypnotic” and Gotham Polish is wild about Chaotic.
Have you seen the Sephora X line at your local Sephora? Have you tried the polish? Ever found a nail polish you love that fails to live up to its promises?

omg! it only lasted one day?!?! what a shame! did you use a top coat?

Top coat and a good base coat too. It just started chipping right away, but that happens with a lot of polishes, including “good” ones like OPI.

I tried and loved Chaotic and, despite the chips, I think I wanna get this one.
And I might be the only person who recommends not using a base coat. I\’ve found with certain polishes, a base coat promotes chips. Also in my experience, the more coats of lacquer, the more likely it is to chip.

Hi Adiel. I’m going to try it without a base coat! Thanks for the tip. I have read that three coats is too much, but it kind of needed three coats to be as opaque as I wanted it.
Very pretty, too bad it didn’t last.
I know, right? I think you’ve worn Sephora polish before. I seem to remember a review of the Sephora nail polish remover. Did you have a problem like this with your polishes?

I love how many colours it has but still doesn`t look “kitsch”! Fab!

Thanks Jen! I know what you mean about the kitsch quality of some polish. I love the look in the bottle, but don’t necessarily want it on my nails. This one is understated enough to be chic I think.

Thanks for an honest review. I would hate to pay $11 a bottle and only have it on one day!
I rarely do my nails because I put them through so much during the day!
I know what you mean Pam, though I have to say the little bottles are so pretty they are almost good just as decoration! I think I’m going to try one more time without base coat, as another person suggested.

LOL, Stacey, the most expensive polish I’ve purchased was $20! I think there’s even more expensive stuff out there, but if you ever go into Sephora look for this line. The display is soooooo yummy.

such a beautiful color…but, what a shame that it doesn’t last very long. Thanks for your honest review.

I have a really hard time with some nail polish. Oddly it’s often the expensive stuff like Deborah Lippmann and OPI that chip the fastest on my nails. It’s very possible that the line would be find for other women but that my nails, being so soft, are just difficult.
