Reconsidering Southwestern Style

SoutWestIllus

Is fringe coming back in fashion? The iconic southwestern style of fringed jackets, moccasins, jeans and turquoise jewelry come in and out of fashion fairly regularly, and I feel like we’re in for another reinvention of this classic American look. Maybe I’ve been looking at too many Free People catalogs but I’m starting to warm up to fringe.  Recently I’ve noticed some cute southwestern inspired looks on the street and I flirted with a suede fringe jacket at at a local thrift store too. Fringed boots and sandals aren’t usually my thing, but when Minnetonka Moccasins contacted me to write a post for them I went over to their site to look around and rather liked what I saw.

These fringe trimmed sandals would add a little extra something to a maxi dress.

When I think moccasins I think brown so I was surprised to see the bright red pair below. Aren’t they fun?

Boots and fringe combine well.

I have to say I am not into fringe but their sandals seem subtle enough.

I used to be heavily into fringe. Too old now. I don’t want it anymore.
But if you are younger (than 59)…. go for it.

I have seen some cute fringe bags. It is definitely a fun look that requires a bit of confidence…

Fringe bags are cute, and I love the way they move. I think that’s what I like about fringe.

Living in Nashville I’m staying away from the fringe. It is often worn very literally here. The whole “country cowgirl” or “squaw princess” looks are not at all uncommon in certain pockets of town. Not a great look unless it happens to be Halloween 😉

Lol! The southwestern look is much less visible here in Los Angeles. I usually only see women wearing a piece or two, but I am seeing a lot of fringe at retail suddenly.

Fringe never really leaves the fashion world, does it? It’s hard to wear without appearing overdone or trendy.

I remember the fringe jackets in the early 90’s. It was LONG fringe, and suede, and oh it looked so good to me. But I never got one. Now I don’t know if I will or not. It can look costumey. I wouldn’t mind a bit of fringe on a sandal or purse though…

I think my favorite era of fashion is the 70’s and that is what fringe reminds me of. i just bought a new Kensie top that has fringe, can’t wait to wear an outfit with it! I have those basic minnetonka mocs, they are super cute.

I’m so glad you like the mocs Shanti! Fringe isn’t a staple for most Anglenos but it does come in and out. I’m seeing A LOT of fringe at retail recently too, so I think I’ll be seeing a lot more of it on the street soon.

I’m tooooootally into fringe and Southwestern style. I’ve actually kind of always loved it. I love colorful moccasins although I’ve never owned a pair b/c they make me look quite a bit shorter I think they’re adorable on other people.

I’m so glad you like the southwester thing. I kind of feel silly for liking it sometimes, but fringe is fun. I bet you’d look fab in a pair of moccasins.
