Hairstyle sketches from Lucky FABB

An illustration of a girl with bobby pinsLast week I attended Lucky FABB west, the Lucky magazine west coast conference for fashion and beauty bloggers. I couldn’t wait to see what the most fashionable women in the blogosphere were wearing. Color and pattern was the big trend at the event, with almost everyone wearing the most brilliant hues. Unfortunately it was a bit too much for my senses, and after a while all the hot pink flippy skirts, festive floral print flouncy blouses, canary yellow “it” bags and neon green open-toe mile-high heels started to blur together. What did stand out were the hair styles. There were super long sleek styles and shoulder-length flips. There were up-dos and magenta streaks. There were poofs and ringlets, big buns and dainty chignons. Because my camera ran out of battery I didn’t take any photos. Instead I drew, and because we were all sitting down most of the time my best drawings are of the bloggers profiles and heads. Here are the hairstyle sketches I drew of the audience at Lucky FABB.

Hairstyle Sketches

 The Glamour Girl

The majority of the fashion bloggers wore their hair in a long, sleek style with large, glamorous curls holding back the hair on either side of their face. The style looked something like this drawing, only not as messy. Yes, glamour was the name of the game at Lucky FABB. I haven’t seen so many women with such perfectly styled hair since high school graduation. Considering that the conference started at 8 am I have to assume that most of the bloggers in attendance woke up before dawn to blow out and carefully curl their long tresses.

Soft Waves

The Small Poof

A couple of bloggers had the top of their hair done in a small poof like this. A sparkly barrette held the teased poof in place.

A Small Chignon

This young woman’s small twisted bun set off a gorgeous rhinestone necklace worn with a ruffle collar. (I found out recently that her name is Karina and she writes the blog Cocoa.)

The Large Sock Bun

One young woman had her hair up in a big sock bun. Although I’ve seen a lot of this style online, I’ve never really noticed it on someone in real life before. It’s a dramatic look.

Braids and Wings

This girl’s braided hair and open-backed top showed off a tattoo of small angel wings between her shoulder blades.Braided hair and wings

Magenta streaks

I counted three women in the audience with magenta hair. This blogger’s dark pink streaks looked very dramatic with her black hair when she pulled it back into this tousled  half-pony tail.

But where are the short styles?

Short hair was almost nonexistent and I noticed the lack of it immediately. I don’t know why everyone had long hair, but it’s definitely a trend among the fashion bloggers that attended the event. I have to count myself among them because although my hair is not waist-length is does hit my shoulders. It wasn’t done in one of these glamorous styles though. Getting up at seven am was early enough. My hair was clean and brushed. That’s it.

What do you think of my hairstyle sketches? How do you wear your hair? Have you ever done your hair in one of these styles?

As you know, I have bangs. Often I throw my hair up in a bun (not a sock bun, just a may own hair!). It is easy and as long as I style my bangs and pull a few pieces down it looks like I put a lot of effort into it. I wear it like that even more now that I am in such a humid climate where a straight look doesn’t last 10 minutes!

My hair loves humidity. It actually shows me some body and bounce! But I know for most women it’s a nightmare. I love your bangs and bun. I seem to remember that’s how you wore your hair in LA too and it looked great.

Heather, you’re so freakin’ talented! I LOVE your sketches!!
Do you ever do them for a fee?

When it comes to hair-dos, I’m as boring as it gets. I just don’t have the time or the talent to do anything dramatic or new. Oh well…. 🙁

Hope you have a fantastic week!

I’m so glad you like my sketches Jeannie. Actually I do them for a fee all the time as a freelancer. I haven’t done any for friends yet though! I am working on a little business project however. Stay tuned.

I’d almost say I’m glad your camera ran out of batteries 😉
Fabulous sketches! You are so talented!

My hairstyle is just boring… I should do a lot more with it and I am constantly checking hairstyles on Pinterest or on Kate’s The Small Things Blog

Thank you Annette. I had to get creative without my usual electronics. It was fun!

Although I wear the somewhat-short “Alice” haircut from Twilight (great cut; atrocious movie) I have a big blonde streak up front and a purple streak on either side. It’s become a trademark look of sorts. I skipped the purple about a year ago and received complaints and questions galore. “Where’s your purple? I liked the purple. You need your purple back.”

    Message received and understood 😉

Your hair cut and color sound fabulous. I love the idea of a signature hair cut look. Over the years mine has become a layered long style that sometimes goes to my chin, sometimes moves down to my shoulders. It give me the most body, which my hair sorely needs.

Your talent never ceases to amaze me! These sketches are so incredible, and I’m happy you were able to capture the hairstyles this way instead of through actual photos. They’re beautiful!

Well, as you’ve probably noticed, my hair is usually messy and disheveled. Haha. It usually takes me about 5 minutes to accomplish 🙂

I absolutely adore these sketches! No short hair styles? Has everyone become a clone?
When I had long hair I definitely scraped it up into top knot for summer or wore it loose with some curls if going out. most of the time now, I just wear it clean, straight, brushed as it’s still pretty short! Need a cut of some sort though!

Honestly, I was kind of wondering if there were giant pods hidden somewhere. (Invasion of the body snatchers only you come out chic instead of bland.) I don’t know why everyone had long hair, but EVERYONE had long hair. The lack of diversity was actually kind of strange.

I can not even begin to tell you how much I adore this… and secretly wish I had your drawing skills!

    Cute drawings, I like them!
I’ve worn my hair in a couple of of those styles but it has been years..
From your description of the bloggers at the conference, it would have been visual overload for me as well (but certainly interesting!)

    • Heather Fonseca April 12, 2013 at 6:09 pm #

I was planning to wear all-black but threw on a bit of color at the end. Wish I hadn’t. I would have really stood out in a simple black outfit. How times have changed!

I wish my hair could look like the glamor girl hair but it never will in my lifetime! I got a haircut about 2 months ago. Waaaay too short! It is finally growing and is passed my shoulders.

There were a few curly-haired women at the show, but most of them had blown their hair into submission I think.

I’d like to try the Magenta streaks.. But it’s good if each style is elaborated with how-to instruction. However, love the way you sketch.

Wow you have some talent going on, it’s so much unique and diffrenet when you illustrate it like that! it’s the kind of sketches i used to do when i was in highschool
