A Few Tiny Closet Organization Ideas

Closet organization - The Style ConfessionsClosets, they’re never big enough are they? I dream about having a large walk-in room like the ones on my closet inspiration Pinboard, but instead of getting larger my wardrobes keep getting smaller. I’ve had a lot of experience with tiny closets, but my newest is so small that even I was stumped at first. I did get it really well organized though. Here are a few tiny closet organization ideas.

My Tiny Closets

I spent years complaining about the 4 foot by 7 foot closet in my 1920’s bungalow, but since we’ve moved to our temporary home my new wardrbe is barely three feet deep and two feet wide. That’s a tiny closet! It makes the previous one seem like ample space for any woman’s collection of clothing. My new situation is really one step up from living out of a suitcase. It should be horrible, but oddly enough it’s actually easier to get dressed in the morning. All I brought to our temporary home are the spring and summer clothes I love the most. I was careful to pack my most versatile items and I also picked a color scheme of blues and greens. The end result is the wardrobe I’ve always wanted: the one where almost everything goes together and getting dressed is a breeze.

Still, I needed help setting up the closet which was just an empty space when we arrived. I needed to arrange purses, shoes, underthings and of course clothes in a way that made sense. I wanted a few tiny closet organization ideas, so I searched Google and my favorite blogs for inspiration and came up with these ten helpful links.

My Tiny Closet Organization Ideas

After reading everything I could find on closet organization I tackled my own tiny space. I didn’t have room to hang my purses so I stuffed them with tissue and placed them in a deep shelf on the top of my wardrobe.

I purchased a hanging shoe organizer from Ikea and filled it with my underthings, t-shirts, and scarves.

My tiny closet might be tiny, but at least it’s deep. I was able to squeeze in two hanger bars, one in the front and one in the back. Here is the back rung. The shoe organizer hangs next to my collection of jackets and coats for the colder days of early spring. Tiny Closet Organization Ideas - Jackets - The Style ConfessionsHere is the front rung with dresses, jeans and blouses. You’ll notice that most of the clothes are in the blue to green range. I specifically chose clothes that worked well together and of course I brought a lot of basic black too!

I put my favorite spring and summer shoes in boxes and stacked them up on the floor of the closet. It’s not perfect, but at least they’re neat. In the front is a box with my everyday shoes. Casual flats sit on top.

Next to the shoes is a wicker box with my collection of clutch bags. Current wisdom suggests that a small wardrobe can be made more interesting with a nice variety of accessories, and these little bags don’t take up much room.

Behind my small purse collection is my gym bag with all my workout clothes.

Not shown is another shelf in a different closet with my jewelry and a few other things. I also packed two boxes with true summer clothes like my bathing suits. They’ll come out as the weather gets warmer.

Well, it might be more like 2.5 feet by 4 feet, but it still reminds me of a high school locker.

Ok. I have hope. I gave up all my space for selling vintage. And now I can’t find any of my personal wardrobe. You’ve given me great ideas- and even better some motivation to get to organizing! I spy a cute vintage frock you rock!

I love that green vintage frock! I haven’t worn it yet this spring but it’s getting so darn hot in LA already that I’m sure it’ll be on me soon. Maybe today!

Eight years ago I annexed the small room of my stepdaughter, who had left to live on her own. It is small (3 by 2 meters) but with a high ceiling. So I had three cupboards built in, each 60cm wide and 3 meters high. As I have an equivalent of that in our bedroom I had so much space…. Now it is filled up completely. I have to give away more and buy less. It is getting ridiculous. And you are right… It is not easy to get dressed when you have a lot. Sometimes I cannot find things anymore.
Question: how do you get to the back hanger bar? Dive underneath the clothes of the front hanger bar?

Greetje your room/closet sounds like heaven. As for my second bar – I shove the things in the front over to one side and dive onto the jacket I want. It works OK.

oh interesting!!! my closet is similar…really deep but pretty narrow…i have one long pole that goes the length of the depth, but i need to see if it makes more sense to hang clothes your way instead! you are so tidy!! making me feel shameful of my closet!

OMG, that is a small space. I can not fit in 10% of what i have in my walk-in. I concur with the prior poster that the more items the harder to decide. The possibility is endless. No wonder stylists almost always have just one rack of clothings items for shoots, not a whole walk-in closet.

Thank you for the links and I’ve checked them out already. 🙂

I’m so glad you like the links. I covet your walk-in!

I would love a spare bedroom to turn into a closet. That sounds like heaven!

May I just say, I have never hung a pair of jeans on a hanger. I use those ultra thin no slip hangers. Your closet is so neat even, when I have clean my closet, it is a mess.

    • Heather Fonseca May 13, 2013 at 2:17 pm #

I would hang my entire wardrobe, even my t-shirts, if I had the space. I’m not big on folding, plus I think it’s easier to find things that are on hangers. I’m kind of a neat freak too and of course I got my closet VERY tidy for the photo shoot!

Thanks for the links! I do have a decent size walk-in, plus two portable armoires in the attic. I keep only the current season’s clothes in the walk-in, so that keeps things relatively sane. But I love your hanging organizer. I think I might have to get one. Ha! I’ve already filled it in my mind.

You organized it very well! My closet situation is pretty bad also, I have to SHARE a closet with my husband!! Can you believe?!? We split it in half and each get a side. I really dread going into it. We have lots of closets but we have other stuff in those.

BTW I like the facelift you are giving your blog! 🙂 Especially the Bloglovin illustration!

I would hate to share a closet with my husband! That must be tough. I don’t think a girl can ever have enough closet space. And thank for the compliments on the new look. I’m still working on it.

  14. Rocquelle May 20, 2013 at 9:12 pm #

Wow, Heather, you have done a greta job with your small closet!! Here in Texas, our idea of a small closet is far bigger than that of many people in other parts of the country, so I won’t talk about my wish for a bigger closet, or at least another one, lol.

My little closet is (hopefully) just temporary, but I hope our next home has some big closets. It’s a lifelong dream of mine!
