Bio-Oil (another great beauty product from the drugstore!)

Bio-Oil review - The Style ConfessionsBio-Oil is another wonderful beauty product sent to me by the same people who gave me the Elizabeth Arden products I raved about in this post. I like the Bio-Oil just as much but for different reasons. For one, this softly scented oil is affordable and available at my local drug store.  I love the way it smells and the way it makes my skin feel soft and moisturized for hours.

What is Bio-Oil?

According to the package Bio-Oil is a moisturizer that treats scars and stretch marks, balances an uneven skin tone, improves the look of aging skin and hydrates skins. Here’s what the company that makes the product says about their beauty oil:

Bio-Oil is a specialist moisturizing oil that helps improve the appearance of scars, stretch marks, uneven skin tone, aging and dehydrated skin. Bio-Oil has won 126 skincare awards since its global launch in 2002. It is America’s #1 selling multi-use skincare oil.

…and here is some more claims from the package, as well as the list of ingredients:

My Review of Bio-Oil

I’ve been using Bio-Oil on my legs and body for a little over a month and I really like the way it makes my skin look and feel. I especially like using it on the driest areas of my body like my elbows, hands and feet. After spreading a few drops on my skin it’s smooth, moisturized and shiny. I wouldn’t say it’s “not greasy” though. It’s an oil and it acts like one. The dry, rather flakey skin I usually have on my legs is banished for a day, at least, after application.

It’s totally a personal preference but I love the subtle, slightly herbal, fragrance.

Bio-Oil costs between $11 and $14 for a 2 ounce bottle. A little goes a long way. I’m about three-quarters of the way through my bottle after several weeks of use, which makes me think this product is a good value as well as a great body moisturizer.

Stretch Marks, Scars and Stinging

Bio-Oil is supposed to help stretch marks, but I’m not pregnant so I really can’t say if it works for that or not. The product hasn’t made any difference in the old, faded ones I have on my hips. I was really hoping it would work to fade scars, but there’s been no difference at all with the old mosquito-bite spots I have on my ankles. Maybe if I continue to use it for another couple of months as suggested on the package there will be a difference.

I can’t speak to the product’s anti-aging abilities because I didn’t use it on my face. I have combination skin and have to be careful not to use anything that might block my pores.

Other reviewers have had problems with a burning sensation a few weeks after they started using the product, but I definitely haven’t found Bio-Oil to sting at all, even after several weeks of use.

So, Bio-Oil hasn’t helped me as an anti-aging potion or scar-fading miracle product, but I still think it’s a great, affordable, body moisturizer for those of us with dry, flaky skin.

No I haven’t yet tried “Bio-Oil” but after seeing its benefits I want to give it a try. It helps to improve scars, strech marks, uneven skintone, aging and dehydrated skin. This oil is the solution of most of the problems. Moreover it is a great body moisturizer.

I used it while I was pregnant and don’t have any stretch marks! YAY! Not sure if it was the bio-oil or genetics, but either way I really liked how it fell on my stretching belly…..

Bio-oil is a bit of a misnomer, as the primary ingredient is the petroleum based mineral oil and there are a lot of synthetic ingredients. If your skin is at all sensitive to petroleum products, it will give a burning/tingling sensation.

Mine is, so I give this a wide berth and use pure almond oil instead, which has exactly the same effect (and can be used on broken skin, unlike Bio-oil, so no need to worry about shaving nicks or scratched hands). A lot cheaper, also available in the grocery or health food store. Plus you can add your own essential or fragrance oils. Lavender oil is something of a cure-all for skin, which is why it keeps popping up.

Having said all that, a good friend who works with animals and is constantly having to wash her hands, swears by a mix of this and Lucas’ pawpaw ointment! Everyone is different 🙂

Thanks Erika! I actually Almond Oil on my skin when I was pregnant and my stretch marks are minimal, so I can definitely speak to that myself. On the other hand, I don’t remember the almond oil being very inexpensive, but I’ll have to go to the health food store and look. Thanks for the suggestions!

So I am currently 30 weeks pregnant and found my first red stretch mark on my stomach two weeks ago even after using bio oil and stretch make creams from Maternity shops! Now this freaked me out so I decided it was time to splurge a little on a product that might help. I have been using the Somaluxe Stretch Mark Treatment for two weeks now and honestly I love Somaluxe, my stretch mark is not “gone” and it never will be but I can hardly see it!
it has gone from being a bright red very noticeable mark to purple then to white and now it practically blends in with my skin tone!

I have started using bio oil on my breasts and they feel firmer but it feels like my skin is ”tingling” . It’s weird to describe like a cold burn. The same kind of burn retinol would cause… I’ll still use it cuz I want to keep on seing results but if it gets worse I’m done.
