What Should I Wear to my Sweet Sixteen Party?

Sweet Sixteen by Heather FonsecaAlvita is celebrating her sweet 16! She wants some ideas on what to wear:

I am a teenager and I’m going to be 16 year old this month. I am going to celebrate my party with my friends. I hope you can give me inspiration because I have no idea! I’m super thin and I usually dress casually. I like something colourful. Thank you:)

What did I wear to my sweet sixteen party? You know, it’s sad because I don’t remember. My birthday party was a little lunch with a few of my friends at a nice restaurant. I wanted a mega-blow-out dance party like the one’s my friends all seemed to be having, but I didn’t get one. (It’s OK. Later on I got to live in Paris.) I probably wore something pretty but casual, but I can’t recall, and that’s why I’m going to suggest you wear something fun, dressy and special. This is a special day. You want to remember the occasion. Dress for it!

A Party Dress for a Special Day

I was never super thin but I had friends who were. One friend was especially self-concious about her chest and clavicles, but she had great legs and arms so she would show those off instead. My suggestion is to layer a fun, bright colored, strapless party dress over a t-shirt or short-sleeved blouse like in the sketch above.  Very slender girls can pull off this look really well because the added fabric never looks bulky, it just looks super cute. You can also layer a dress over a short-sleeved T-shirt.

My twelve year old daughter thought the idea of wearing a dress over a shirt was weird. Back when I was in my early 20’s this look of layering a dress over a t-shirt or shirt was all the rage, so it doesn’t sound strange to me at all. If it does to you then just wear the dress by itself and have a great time. You’ll look beautiful. I promise.

Accessorize the look with a bright purse where you can stash your lipgloss and phone. To keep the look casual wear it with flats or converse in a color that contrasts with the dress.

Happy Birthday Alvita! I hope you have a wonderful day.

I think this is a super fun look for a sweet 16 party… and in fact has a very Hollywood cool element- Emma Stone wore a t-shirt under a dress recently on the red carpet!

Thanks Alexis! I didn’t know Emma Stone wore a dress with a t-shirt recently. Personally it’s a look I’ve always liked and I’d be happy to see it come back.

I thought this look was back in fashion? I have seen several girls in The Netherlands with strapless dresses over T-shirts or blouses. Also strapless tops over T-shirt/blouse with shorts and tights and boots. All of which is really reserved for the young. Just image me walking in it at 59 hahaha.
Didn’t know you have a twelve year old daughter. I remember now you said you have kids, but you look so not like a mum (= compliment) that I forgot.

I think the layering look is coming back in fashion but it’s still new, well, new to this generation. It’s not new to me! But I think it’s a great look regardless.

Gorgeous dress suggestion with or without shirt underneath. Some girls at that age prefer to cover up, some are the opposite – whatever Alvita feels more comfortable with.
The fuller lower part of the dress surely looks great for a very slim girl.

I always enjoy your fashion sketches, Heather.
