I quickly put together this casual evening look to go out to dinner a few weeks ago. It was one of the last of our cool evenings. I certainly wouldn’t be wearing a jacket or a scarf in the humid late summer heat we’ve been experiencing recently, even at night. Although the outfit is casual it still feels somewhat glamorous. It goes to show you what a printed scarf can do for an outfit. Without the polka dots the ensemble would be very simple indeed, but the big graphic circles give it flare. Continue Reading →

Stormy San Francisco Afternoon
On one of our last days in San Francicso my husband and I ventured down into the ruins of Sutro Baths to take some photos and play tourist. This little stretch of ocean is a bleak, otherworldly place, and yet so beautiful. Knowing it would be cool by the water I layered myself in a dress, tights, boots, scarf and trusty denim jacket. A Chic and Summery Denim Trend to Love
Denim. I just can’t seem to get enough these days. White denim, blue denim, chambray, colored denim, and printed denim pieces have recently found homes in my closet. Could it be a trend? Well, yeah. But it’s a trend that really works for my lifestyle and is perfect for the more casual atmosphere of the summer months. The trick is to find a way to wear these super-trendy pieces so they look chic rather than trendy.
The perfect white denim skirt has been a “holy grail” item for years. I love wearing white denim in the summer months and a skirt in the fabric has always seemed like the perfect blend of informality and city chic. Unfortunately white jean skirts have been in short supply in recent years. Even The Gap, my “go to” store for denim basics, was without this summer classic for many years and if they did have them they were of the super-short mini skirt variety. So earlier this spring when I bought my blue denim pencil skirt I asked about a white version and was told to head to their website to check it out. I rarely buy clothes on-line, but this was an exception.
The Denim Jacket at Night
A denim jacket is a delightfully versatile piece of clothing. Mine is a year-round favorite as it enhances so many different looks. You can see it here, here and here worn during the day, but I also love wearing this classic jacket on balmy summer evenings. Denim has a wonderful way of calming down a dressy outfit, taking it from maybe-a-little-too-formal to elegant-yet-casual. I also like the fact that dark denim looks amazing with black, my favorite evening color. The metal buttons that decorate most denim jackets coordinate with metallic jewelry of all kinds and it’s fun to wear shiny, glittery, jewelry in the evening.
Friday night was beautiful and balmy, a wonderful start to the liquid summer nights we have here in Los Angeles. My husband and I had plans for dinner and I wanted to wear an outfit that would be elegant but casual enough for a local restaurant. The simple little black jersey dress I chose to wear felt a bit too serious. So on went some shimmery copper heels and ropes of chain worn in a Chanel-inspired way, but now I felt too dressy. Then I pulled on my denim jacket and the outfit felt just right. I tucked a lipstick and phone into my mother’s vintage leopard purse, grabbed a little hat and, why not, a pair of lace gloves that have been calling to me for weeks, and we were on our way.

Street Art and Fashion Photography
My husband found this vacant lot in East Hollywood and pointed it out to me. Some local artists had placed painted doors and other objects covered in graffiti amidst the waist-high weeds and broken beer bottles. Because this sort of impromptu art gallery is often short-lived we pulled over and took some photos that afternoon.
Aren’t the photos spectacular? You might be surprised to hear that when my husband first showed them to me I asked if we could go back and take them over. The late afternoon light was harsh and I was critical of how I looked in the photos. Hugo reassured me that he would take care of everything on the computer. He has not let me down yet so I decided to trust his judgement and see what he could make of them.
I’ve noticed a number of people discussing photo retouching and the use of post editing computer software to alter images used in personal style blogs. Many people say they do not use these tools. They want their images to be a true recreation of who they are. Maybe I’m just artsy, but I love what my husband does to his photos of me after he’s taken them. He believes that images are a kind of language, a language that’s now available to everyone with access to a computer and the freedom of the web. He wants to create memorable images and feels strongly that the kind of alterations he does enhances and sometimes creates a whole feeling to the photos that is not evident in real life. Would you ever know from these photos that just a few yards away were four lanes of rush hour traffic and that there were another group of people taking photos in the same spot? It’s the work my husband did to the images after the fact that gives them their saturated colors and creepy, twilight vibe.
I’m wearing my favorite denim jacket over a purple jersey blouse and teal jeans. On my feet are the most unsuitable, impractical shoes I own: purple suede peep-toe platform heels decorated with strips of navy blue suede. It was love at first sight but I still struggle to find ways to wear them. The new black clutch that I’m currently wearing with everything is showing off its removable silver chain shoulder strap.
