Last week I attended Lucky FABB west, the Lucky magazine west coast conference for fashion and beauty bloggers. I couldn’t wait to see what the most fashionable women in the blogosphere were wearing. Color and pattern was the big trend at the event, with almost everyone wearing the most brilliant hues. Unfortunately it was a bit too much for my senses, and after a while all the hot pink flippy skirts, festive floral print flouncy blouses, canary yellow “it” bags and neon green open-toe mile-high heels started to blur together. What did stand out were the hair styles. There were super long sleek styles and shoulder-length flips. There were up-dos and magenta streaks. There were poofs and ringlets, big buns and dainty chignons. Because my camera ran out of battery I didn’t take any photos. Instead I drew, and because we were all sitting down most of the time my best drawings are of the bloggers profiles and heads. Here are my hairstyle sketches from Lucky FABB. Continue Reading →

What’s Wrong with Fashion Blogs?

I write a fashion blog. What’s more, I read lots of blogs about fashion, personal style, street style and beauty. I like discovering the formerly unheard voices of women who wear the clothes the apparel companies manufacture and the magazines glamorize. I like the critique, the stories, and the often complete superficiality of what someone wears on any given day. I like the style advice even if I don’t agree with it. And street style photography? I love it! How else will I ever know what the cool kids are wearing in Milan, New York and Paris? Beauty blogs are their own niche but I love them too and read several. I was not an early adopter of all the internet had to offer, but now that I’m into it I am really, really, into it.
The internet has empowered me. I am no longer tied to what the fashion magazines want to show me. I can go out and find it myself without ever leaving my home, and I thank the fashion bloggers for that. But there are plenty of people who don’t agree with me. There is as much criticism out there as there is love for this medium that I have embraced. Every so often it seems like it’s hip to dish fashion blogs, and although I’ve found articles criticizing fashion blogs going back as far as 2010, recently there’s been another wave. Now, I can’t disagree with all of it but much of the criticism seems to stem from people disliking the way fashion blogs have evolved. Here is a smattering of the complaints and rebuttals I’ve found on the internet. Continue Reading →
Furry jacket, skinny jeans and leopard print boots: an outfit of favorites
I’m back with another outfit post featuring a few of my favorite items of clothing. You’ve seen most of these pieces many times on the blog. I wear my faux fur jacket because it’s warm, lightweight and fun too. I often choose the little ruffly leopard print scarf because it always seems to fall just the right way around my neck. New to the blog are the jeans, shoes, and earrings, but each piece is quickly becoming a favorite too.
The Importance of Fashion Accessories
One of the things I’ve noticed about fashionable women is that it’s not just their clothes that look great, their outfits are always punctuated with great accessories. Often great style is in the details. Continue Reading →
A Summer Dress in the Fall
Recently I’ve noticed that many of my favorite bloggers have pulled their summer frocks out of the closet to pair them with cozy sweaters and boots. It’s not difficult to see why. As the days get colder, shorter and darker I long for the long, lazy days of summer too. A pretty print dress brings with it a bit of warm-weather nostalgia. I’ll have to wait a few months for summer bliss, but in the meantime I’ll wear this dress. Continue Reading →
