What’s Wrong with Fashion Blogs?

I write a fashion blog. What’s more, I read lots of blogs about fashion, personal style, street style and beauty. I like discovering the formerly unheard voices of women who wear the clothes the apparel companies manufacture and the magazines glamorize. I like the critique, the stories, and the often complete superficiality of what someone wears on any given day. I like the style advice even if I don’t agree with it. And street style photography? I love it! How else will I ever know what the cool kids are wearing in Milan, New York and Paris? Beauty blogs are their own niche but I love them too and read several. I was not an early adopter of all the internet had to offer, but now that I’m into it I am really, really, into it.

The internet has empowered me. I am no longer tied to what the fashion magazines want to show me. I can go out and find it myself without ever leaving my home, and I thank the fashion bloggers for that. But there are plenty of people who don’t agree with me. There is as much criticism out there as there is love for this medium that I have embraced. Every so often it seems like it’s hip to dish fashion blogs, and although I’ve found articles criticizing fashion blogs going back as far as 2010, recently there’s been another wave. Now, I can’t disagree with all of it but much of the criticism seems to stem from people disliking the way fashion blogs have evolved. Here is a smattering of the complaints and rebuttals I’ve found on the internet. Continue Reading →

Real Life Versus The Fashion Blog

My husband and I had an argument over these shots. I think it might have been the first time we majorly disagreed on a set of photos.

As a designer I know that to really love a project I need to have control over what I’m doing. My favorite clients are the one’s that allow me a certain amount of creative freedom. If I’m designing something for myself or a loved one you can bet I want creative control. I don’t even like it when my family makes suggestions on what to cook for dinner! Knowing this I try very hard to let my husband do what he wants with the photos for this blog. Often I’ll pick out my favorite shots and maybe I’ll make some suggestions on retouching (yes, I’m vain.) but other than that I try to let Hugo have complete creative freedom. He picks the angles, camera equipment, and setting. I pick out my clothing for the photo shoot. Later, after we’ve chosen our favorites and he’s done whatever post-processing he desires, I put them up on the blog and write about them. Continue Reading →

Blogs in Style: Ten Fabulous Posts from Around the Web

There are dozens of fashion, style and beauty blogs on my Google Reader list. My favorite posts feature photos of the blogger’s personal style, but I also enjoy lifestyle articles, recipes and beauty reviews. It’s so much fun seeing what my favorite authors are reading as well, so I’m always happy to come across “Best Articles of the Week” kind of posts with links to other websites. Normally I post my favorite articles to Twitter and if I have time I leave a little comment too, but for the last couple months I’ve wanted to do more.  It took The Citizen Rosebud’s amazing article on aging, fashion and Advanced Style to finally push me into creating a “Link Love” post here on The Style Confessions. So with no further ado, here are a few posts that have touched me in some way over the last few weeks. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have. Continue Reading →

Chic Vintage Eyeglasses and the Truth about Fashion Blogging

There are a lot of nice aspects to being a style blogger, or a fashion blogger, or whatever it is that we who posts photos of our outfits online call ourselves.  One is meeting other people who share our passion for fashion and clothing.  Another is being invited by these new friends to local store openings and fashion-related events. This weekend he charming Sasha Jones of LA Inspiration asked my husband and I to attend a party at a local eyewear boutique. The store, called The Guise Archives, offers a large selection of beautiful vintage eyeglass frames.  They sell new, high-end frames as well, but I was so obsessed with the chunky vintage sunglasses that I wasn’t able to focus on much else. My friend and fellow fashion blogger Anne Bray of Spy Girl joined us at the event. We tried on lots of sunglasses.  It was fun. Continue Reading →

Lace Tights and Date Nights

It’s date night, and even though my husband and I have been married for over 15 years, I still love to get dressed up when we go out.  I want to look sexy and beautiful. Lace tights and a mini-dress feel perfect for a casual evening at the movies.

The last time lace tights were trendy I was in my early teens. I figured out fast that the best way to wear them was with a short skirt. My parents weren’t all that happy about that particular look when I was so young, so I had to wait for them to come back into fashion before I could test my theory.

A couple of years ago I noticed lace tights were returning but I wasn’t sure I could work them into my wardrobe. You see, mini-skirts are something of an issue for me.  I don’t like showing a lot of bare leg anymore, though I had no problem with it when I was in my 20′s.  I still like short skirts, and I think I can still pull it off, so a solution to the bare leg had to be found.  I stumpled upon these capri-length lace tights at Target, and thought; “Oh! I think this will work with my black jersey dress.”

This dress, paired with capri-length tights or leggings, is a flattering mini-skirt option.  It’s is one of those things that I never thought would look good on me, but I tried it on a whim and was happy to see that it hid a multitude of sins.  If you haven’t considered a draped jersey dress yet, try one on!  In the photo below you can see how it’s gathered at the waist and blouses out from there. The wrap top is also very flattering, though I do have to wear a camisole underneath.

I’ve worn this multi-chain necklace before on this blog, and probably will again and again and again.  The purse I’ve had for years.  I think it was my mother’s before it found it’s way to my closet so I have no idea how old it is. However, it goes to show you that what was once fashionable will always return at some point.  You just have to be patient.

What do you wear for date night?  Do you like lace tights?  How do you wear them?
