Last year’s fashion trends worn today

Last year's fashion trends worn today

Fashions fade, style is eternal. - Yves Saint-Laurent

One of the things that is so difficult about being fashionable is that the “in” item from last season has a very short shelf life. It seems silly to invest in expensive garments and accessories if you know they’re going to look dorky a year later. Take, for instance, the little Bermuda hat I’m wearing in these photos. Last summer everyone on the fashion blogosphere was wearing one. I loved the way they looked, so I searched the stores for one to buy, but I couldn’t find one that looked right on my head. Fast forward several months.  I’m browsing through a local consignment store when I see a few piled up on a table, last year’s rejects. It looked just right and the price was right too, so I bought it. Since then it’s rarely left my head, but I wonder if I look hopelessly “last season”. Then I wonder why I care. Continue Reading →

Denim on Denim

The first time I noticed double denim it was sometime in the early 90′s. I was flipping through a magazine when I was stopped by the site of a model wearing dark denim from tip to toe. I remember thinking how fresh and hip she looked. Even though the trend had its moment and then fell into ridicule I never really stopped liking the look. As with so many fashion trends from the early 90′s double denim is back in style. Although I’m not really seeing denim on denim in every ad like it was back then, the look is undeniably popping up on the street. I’ve tried the look myself with varying amounts of success. (I tried it last year in this post. I think I’ve done much better this time.) It’s not easy to look laid back, chic and stylish wearing denim accented with more denim. Often it just looks too matchy-matchy. So I have put together a Pinterest Board to help me figure out just how to wear this trend. Continue Reading →

The Camouflage Print Fashion Trend

When I wear this camouflage print skirt I feel like such a trend setter . Why? I’ve been wearing it for ten years, probably way before all the chic girls on my camouflage print Pinterest board bought their cute print jackets.  It’s a little too big on me now, and faded, but I love it and have worn it every fall for the past ten years. It’s old and comfortable enough to wear around the house but suddenly it’s also fashionable enough to wear out and about. Continue Reading →

Caving into a Fast Fashion Trend

It seems like I’ve been buying more clothes recently than I have in years. This is partially because my freelance design business is thriving and I have the money to enjoy shopping once again, and partially due to what’s been coined “fast fashion”. There’s great stuff out there.  It’s well designed and it’s cheap. New, trendy, clothing is more available than ever before, the trick is to find items that will look good for a long time rather than stuff that will be dated by next year.  Sometimes I buy great, classic pieces that I wear for ages, sometimes I cave in and get things I know are just a fad. Summer is a Bikini on the Beach

Summer. It’s so evocative.  I imagine long days spent lounging in a bikini drinking home-made ice tea while reading delightful novels on a chaise lounge under the shade of a large umbrella. The reality will be more like the rest of the year. No doubt I’ll spend most of June, July and August working in my studio, driving kids to their activities, and running the usual errands.  The main difference is the weather will be warmer, the days longer and I’ll cook most of my family’s dinners on the outdoor grill. It’s not that I dislike the reality so much as I’m frustrated by the fiction.  Where did I get this idea that summers should consist of days doing next to nothing?  It isn’t just the fashion and lifestyle magazines that project this delightful summer fantasy, it’s my childhood memories of long days spent in idle pursuits that lull me into believing that summer should be a relaxing void of blue skies, blue water and palm trees.
