One of the things that is so difficult about being fashionable is that the “in” item from last season has a very short shelf life. It seems silly to invest in expensive garments and accessories if you know they’re going to look dorky a year later. Take, for instance, the little Bermuda hat I’m wearing in these photos. Last summer everyone on the fashion blogosphere was wearing one. I loved the way they looked, so I searched the stores for one to buy, but I couldn’t find one that looked right on my head. Fast forward several months. I’m browsing through a local consignment store when I see a few piled up on a table, last year’s rejects. It looked just right and the price was right too, so I bought it. Since then it’s rarely left my head, but I wonder if I look hopelessly “last season”. Then I wonder why I care.
