Just Another Chilly Spring Day

These photos were taken a few weeks ago when we were having quite a cold snap. I had just updated my closet for the warm spring season and found myself staring at a closet full of summer clothes. The weather outside wasn’t having any of it. Still experimenting with the “dress warmly in spring clothing” concept I put together black cropped trousers, a bright purple blouse and my divinely warm faux fur jacket.

I purchased these cropped trousers over two years ago. At the time they fit perfectly, but I lost weight last year and now they hang on me. Undeterred I decided to wear them out anyway. I love the look of oversized pants on other women and thought I’d have a go at it.

Have you ever lost weight and found that half your wardrobe no longer fits? I’ve had a few things taken in but I’ve passed most of my too-big clothes on to the Goodwill. I’m excited to be fitting into smaller clothes but it’s scary too. I have no intention of letting the pounds creep back on, of course, but I still look at size 10 pants and wonder how they’ll ever get past my hips. When they do I’m rather amazed.

These pants are a size 14. They were favorites and I hate to let them go, but I think I’ll pass them on to another woman. Maybe they’ll be her favorite too.

I hope the weather is lovely where you. I don’t know about you but I’m ready for some warmth and sunshine.

Evening at the Bonaventure

The Bonaventure hotel is one of LA’s most iconic buildings.  Its been used as a location for dozens of movies many of which are proudly mentioned on plaques placed around the hotel. When it was built in 1976 it was the tallest building in downtown Los Angeles, but now it’s dwarfed by a number of skyscrapers.  Over thirty years later the futuristic architecture is still very cool, and the elevators are as fast as an amusement ride, only with a better view.

No, I’m not the view.  My husband took these photos as we made our way to the famous rotating bar on the top floor.  Over my shoulder you can see the lights of the city.  The glass elevators start in the lobby and then shoot up past the ceiling to fly along the exterior of the building.

Wait, did I just say ROTATING rooftop bar? Why yes I did. If you didn’t see enough from the elevator head to the top floor, order yourself a drink, and take in a 360 degree view of the City of Angels.  When I was young my parents would take me to the Bonaventure to ride the elevators. Later I’d order a Shirley Temple and watch as the world slowly spun around me. Now I order a Cosmopolitan instead.

The Bonaventure simply oozes 70′s glamour.  At the time it must have been the hight of modern cool.  Now it’s slightly faded and rather dated but it’s still a lot of fun. I couldn’t help but want to dress up in 1970′s inspired evening apparel including a swirl print strapless maxi dress, short fur coat and mile-high orange platforms.

The Lady of the Trailer

Every time I go camping I instinctively pack old jeans that no longer fit, boxy L.L. Bean jackets, Patagonia fleece sweaters, a shredded denim skirt purchased ages ago at Target, sweats and faded T-shirts that I normally wear for my daily jog. Throw in an ancient pair of sneakers and I look, well, nothing short of frumpy. I’m in good company.  Everyone else at the campground is wearing some variation on the same theme.

The other day as I packed for another outdoor adventure I decided to try a new approach.  We were headed to a lovely stretch of sand located next to a charming ocean-side town of Carpenteria.  The campground sits right on the beach, and the closest we get to “roughing it” is cuddling up in a sleeping bag in the trailer.  We even make coffee in an electric coffee maker.  I didn’t see why I needed to wear fleece and sweats.

So I packed my favorite jeans, cute shoes, and even my new faux fur jacket. After a few days in the campground I can see why I normally pack old fleece and ancient jeans. My faux fur jacket was cozy warm, but not the best choice for camp cooking.  (The damage isn’t noticeable, but a bit of the fur on one sleeve melted together while I was placing corn on the grill.) Thankfully the campfire ember that landed on my favorite jeans didn’t burn a hole through the leg and I don’t even want to recall the looks I got from other campers as I strolled the asphalt in my new Missoni for Target heels.

But I look pretty glam don’t I?
