Why get dressed up?

On weekdays I get up early, drink copious amounts of coffee, and throw on shorts and a t-shirt. With my trusty flip-flop sandals on my feet I busy myself in the kitchen making breakfast and packing school lunches. Later I’ll drive my kids to school, return home, maybe go for a quick walk, and then start work. Sometime during the day I’ll find some time to take a shower and return to my shorts, t-shirt and flip-flops. I realized the other day as I stared into my densely packed closet that I probably wear 90% of my clothes 10% of the time. Dressy things like this pencil skirt and chunky platform sandals are only worn on the weekend. But sometimes I wonder why I bother at all? Wouldn’t it be easier to wear jeans and a t-shirt every day? Wouldn’t it be nice to stare into a simple, spare wardrobe of only a few sensible clothes? Shouldn’t I long for comfortable clothing that creates ease of movement?

Nope. If I had to wear my work-from-home uniform of shorts, t-shirt and flats all the time I would probably be very depressed. Saturday and Sunday are days to get dressed up. Even if I’m going to the grocery store I put on something nice, and probably something that isn’t all the comfortable. I match my purse to my outfit, pick out earrings, slip on a shoe with a bit of a heel, tidy my hair and apply makeup to my face. Continue Reading →

Looking Gorgeous in Vintage Inspired Dresses

When I first saw Christina Hendricks sashay across the office of a fictional Madison Avenue advertising agency my jaw dropped.  Seeing a really curvy woman portrayed as sexy, intelligent and beautiful was not something I’d seen on television, ever. Like everyone else who’s seen “Mad Men” I was immediately hooked. The story line and characters were intriguing, but the clothes worn by the female leads blew me away. To say the costumes were inspirational is putting it mildly, and yet I have struggled to find a way to wear the form-fitting, sexy but professional, early 1960′s office wear epitomized by two favorite characters in the show, Joan and Peggy. Oh I know certain brands offer a whole “Mad Men” collection every year, but as much as I want to love it, the clothes just bore me. So when a representative for Fever Designs contacted me about about creating a sponsored post for their collection of vintage inspired clothing I was very excited. Finally I’ve found a line of apparel that really seems to get that fabulous, retro, sexy-but-buttoned-up look.  I haven’t worked at an office in many years, but I think if I was I might just put some of these beautiful office outfits to the test. A Chic and Summery Denim Trend to Love

Denim. I just can’t seem to get enough these days. White denim, blue denim, chambray, colored denim, and printed denim pieces have recently found homes in my closet.  Could it be a trend?  Well, yeah. But it’s a trend that really works for my lifestyle and is perfect for the more casual atmosphere of the summer months. The trick is to find a way to wear these super-trendy pieces so they look chic rather than trendy.

The perfect white denim skirt has been a “holy grail” item for years.  I love wearing white denim in the summer months and a skirt in the fabric has always seemed like the perfect blend of informality and city chic. Unfortunately white jean skirts have been in short supply in recent years.  Even The Gap, my “go to” store for denim basics, was without this summer classic for many years and if they did have them they were of the super-short mini skirt variety. So earlier this spring when I bought my blue denim pencil skirt I asked about a white version and was told to head to their website to check it out.  I rarely buy clothes on-line, but this was an exception.
