Clothes – they mean so much to me – but why? Perhaps it’s that they allow me to express myself visually, perhaps it’s the memories they carry with them, or maybe I’m just hopelessly shallow. When I look in my closet I see skirts, dresses, jackets, accessories and shoes, but I also see the stories attached to the clothing. I love my little collection of garments, and can tell you just where I purchased them and the mood I was in at the time as well.
Almost everything I’m wearing in this post was a gift. It’s these pieces that have the most meaning to me and I am especially fond of this dress and jacket because of how they came to be in my closet.

Last summer I was truly low on cash. I would have loved a few new clothes, but it just wasn’t reasonable with my budget at the time. Then my a good friend gave me a big bag filled with garments that she no longer wore. It was the best gift anyone could have ever given me!
She bought this pretty ruffle trimmed wrap dress in Spain. I always think of it as “Ann’s Spanish Dress”.

Is there such a thing as a high-end hand-me-down? If there is then this lightweight cotton Marni jacket fits the description.

It’s made of a rather heavy-weight cotton but the open cut and multiple pleats make it comfortable. On the inside every seam has been piped. I’m the sort of person who loves looking at beautiful workmanship. It makes me happy.

The scarf was a gift from my Aunt, who has worked in the designer apparel department at the Macy’s in downtown San Francisco for many years. It’s such a beautiful thing: a sheer, floaty, paisley print in denim blues. Sometimes I just take it out and gaze at it. The tiny dots are gold glitter, printed on top of the chiffon.

But this outfit is more than just memories. The weather here in LA is heating up. We’re in the midst of yet another Spring heat wave, and what better way to stay cool but to wear clothes the color of water? A lightweight, ruffly dress like this is perfect on a hot day. When it gets cooler in the evening I can put on the jacket and the scarf to stay warm.
