Blogs in Style: The Biker Jacket Edition

Motorcycle jacketA few years ago Balmain sent models down the runway wearing studded, shredded, embellished versions of the iconic biker jacket. I’ve wanted one ever since. After turning down dozens for problems with fit or fabrication, I finally found one at the Gap that looked just right. Now that it’s finally cold enough to wear leather I find myself reaching for it almost every day. I like to wear mine with jeans, or a black dress, but there are lots and lots of ways to wear this iconic piece. Here are ten posts from around the web that inspire me. Continue Reading →

White Jeans and Street Art

Bright colors, strange juxtapositions, unusual type styles, personal expression and  rebellion personify street art. I have never created a speck of graffiti but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy it on our back alleys and sides of buildings.  Once the famous Bansky came to our little-big city and left us with walls decorated with huge spray-painted rats grumbling about their life. More recently the local Museum of Modern Art held an exhibit on street art that was nothing short of sensational.

I don’t know who painted the large-scale works of art that I’m posing up against.  In fact, I don’t even know where they are.  These photos are composites.  My husband took the photos of the graffiti and added me to them.  It gives the images a surreal feeling I really like.

The outfit is more mundane than the art I’m posing against.  I actually wore this the day of my failed attempt to carry a clutch with me while running errands.  (You can read about the debacle and my love for clutch purses here.) Even though it was a crazy afternoon I love the simplicity and brilliant colors in the ensemble. The Marni jacket is a very pale grey.  It’s a hand-me-down from a good friend as well as one of the nicest pieces of clothing in my wardrobe. I purchased the T-shirt last year from a local boutique. The clutch is from Veronica M and the orange sandals are by Camper.

The white jeans deserve their own paragraph because I am so obsessed with them.  I’m not sure it’s healthy to be in love with an article of clothing, but for someone who’s had a difficult relationship with jeans for most of her adult life finding a brand that fits this well and is so flattering is something to be very excited about.  The jeans are by NYDJ a.k.a. “Not Your Daughter’s Jeans”. I’d heard about the brand for a long time but only tried on a pair recently. The jeans fit high on the waist which is something of a shock after years of seeing nothing but low-rise jeans.  Once you get used to the way they look on the hips you’ll notice that there is no “muffin top”.  In fact your whole lower abdomen is smooth and shapely.  The jeans run large, so grab a pair one size smaller than your usual size. Although they’re considered “premium denim” at just over $100 they cost less than many other denim brands.

I’m very excited to report that I found a number of NYDJ jeans on “Lyst.com”.  Click on an image below to see a collection of items in the same spirit as this outfit including the very jeans I’m wearing.

What do you think of graffiti or street art? Have you ever tried NYD jeans?

Winter Plaid

A Passion for Plaid

The other day I found a pair of plaid shoes on sale at a local shoe mart.  The size wasn’t quite right and my husband couldn’t understand why I would ever want a pair of fuzzy plaid pumps, so I put them aside.  Part of me still longs for them though.  You see I love plaid, really love it and can’t get enough of it, ever. Winter is the perfect time to indulge in this romantic textile, so even though I passed on the shoes I didn’t pass on this perfectly practical coat, found on sale last year.  Maybe one day I’ll have the courage to buy some shoes to match.

This outfit is very carefully constructed around a styling principle I learned as a doll designer.  When I want to combine a few unusual colors together on a doll I will create a print with those colors then add the print somewhere to the outfit.  Voila!  With the addition of the print all the colors will harmonize. In this case the plaid coat substitutes for the print. It’s woven from threads of black, grey, cream, light teal and burgundy.  I wore a burgundy faux fur neck scarf, teal blouse, teal clutch, black jeans and grey boots and liked how the pieces looked together, however the outfit really came together with the addition of the coat. After years of designing for dolls I suppose I’ve started dressing like one myself.

Grey Boots with Red Zippers

To improve our websites and gain more followers bloggers are advised to focus on SEO, or “Search Engine Optimization”. People explore the web by typing in “key words” on Google and other search engines, but what do you do when people find your blog by typing in the phrase “grey boots with red zippers”? Last year I posted this outfit and included a photo of my grey boots.  That photo is in the top 20 most viewed posts on this site.  This is the sort of strange, random thing that really makes me scratch my head in wonder.

Here I am wearing the sought after boots once again.  When I purchased them I thought they were a bit unusual but wearable.  Unfortunately they’re just unusual. The don’t look good with skirts at all, in fact they only look good with these black jeans.  I’ve tried them with other outfits but they just don’t look right. So buyers beware!  They do, however, look pretty great with this combination of black, teal and burgundy.

Can’t Get Enough of the Clutch Trend

Ever since I started seeing photos of women in Manhattan and Paris toting around these very impractical little purses I’ve desperately wanted one myself.  I was lucky enough to find my python clutch at the Goodwill early this fall, but I have searched for these little bags at retail with no success, until now.  I wandered into a small, independent clothing store called Veronica M and found myself surrounded by the cutest collection of bags.  This bright blue one caught my eye.  The price was affordable.  How could I say no?  Here’s to small local shops selling trendy goods before the big chains jump on the bandwagon!

I’m rather on the fence about the clutch trend.  On the one hand I find it very elegant, on the other it’s so incredibly impractical I wonder how long it will be in fashion.  It took me a long time to warm to the really huge bag trend that was in style for so long, but I adored this small bag trend immediately.  Theres something very ladylike about these little purses. Perhaps that’s why I like them.

What are your thoughts on plaid?  Do you like the clutch purse trend?

The Lady of the Trailer

Every time I go camping I instinctively pack old jeans that no longer fit, boxy L.L. Bean jackets, Patagonia fleece sweaters, a shredded denim skirt purchased ages ago at Target, sweats and faded T-shirts that I normally wear for my daily jog. Throw in an ancient pair of sneakers and I look, well, nothing short of frumpy. I’m in good company.  Everyone else at the campground is wearing some variation on the same theme.

The other day as I packed for another outdoor adventure I decided to try a new approach.  We were headed to a lovely stretch of sand located next to a charming ocean-side town of Carpenteria.  The campground sits right on the beach, and the closest we get to “roughing it” is cuddling up in a sleeping bag in the trailer.  We even make coffee in an electric coffee maker.  I didn’t see why I needed to wear fleece and sweats.

So I packed my favorite jeans, cute shoes, and even my new faux fur jacket. After a few days in the campground I can see why I normally pack old fleece and ancient jeans. My faux fur jacket was cozy warm, but not the best choice for camp cooking.  (The damage isn’t noticeable, but a bit of the fur on one sleeve melted together while I was placing corn on the grill.) Thankfully the campfire ember that landed on my favorite jeans didn’t burn a hole through the leg and I don’t even want to recall the looks I got from other campers as I strolled the asphalt in my new Missoni for Target heels.

But I look pretty glam don’t I?

  • Jacket – “Gallery” purchased at Nordstroms
  • T-shirt – Target

San Francisco Street Style – Accessories

A couple days ago I wrote about style in general in the City by the Bay, but I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t fixate on accessories.  First off, hats are worn by pretty much everyone in San Francisco.  It’s can be rather cold, so a hand knitted something is always appropriate, no matter how unusual.

Footwear is almost always of the practical sort, and I noticed leather flip-flops were a continual favorite.

I love purses, and the ones slung over the shoulders of the people I saw on the street in San Francisco were both practical and unique. The woman in the photo below carried both a leather shoulder bag and a big floral tote, because you can never have enough space when you’re on the go!

A large purple backpack is a good choice when traveling by skateboard.

Los Angeles isn’t the only place where women choose to express their style with a status tote.

The super-long shoulder bag worn with super long hair.

But my favorite bag seen on the street was this one-shoulder see-though yellow pack worn over an all-black outfit.  Loved it!

For more fashion in The City, check out my review of the fashion exhibit I saw while I was there: “Balenciaga and Spain”.
